Cars- a disaster just WAITING to happen

Post by Tyranidking on Thu Dec 23, 2010 2:30 am

So, I'm coming of the age where humans begin learning how to use cars. The problem is, I don't like that idea.

You see, I'm an accident waiting to happen. I am inherently slow and cautious, my reaction time is arguably below that of someone who's drunk, even when I'm completely sober. The only good thing is my attention span, which is quite a way above average. I would be a danger to abolutely everyone, a catalyst for destruction, and that's on a good day. So one could see my obvious reluctance. Yet, I need to travel long distances somehow.

My father suggests giving it a try. Of course, if he wasn't so well spoken, any sane person would consider him a maniac for sending me into one of those deathtraps, especially with how I am.

What do you guys feel?

It's your decision and yours alone.
If you need to travel long distances i'd say take a couple of driving lessons and see if you like it or not.

If you don´t feel like it´s something you should do, then you shouldn´t do it. It ends up being up to you, Nid.

But I understand your father´s point of view and you can always give it a shot, just to see how it is. And you will even have a tutor ready to prevent disasters, should you accidently drive both of you off a bridge. Razz

Perhaps then you can make a more self-conscious decision, after experimenting.

Good luck.

Maybe try some sort of open-day car driving? At this open-day event I went to, they were offering 'taster' car driving sessions in a Vauxhall Astra. They let me in, and they hand over the controls to you and let you drive round an oval track, whilst the car is limited to 40.

If you don't think you're ready, don't force yourself. But maybe give it a go to see how it is

The bridge would be the best case scenario. The turning into a mobile missile and crushing people to death without realising it and with no way to stop it is the worse case scenario. If you're gonna put me in a place with loads of other learners and give me something I cannot feasibly control, you might as well install a kill tally while you're at it.

I do not like the idea of putting someone with my accidental destructive potential anywhere near others. I hate humans. However, killing them accidentally is not on my list of things to do. I think I'll pass ^^'

Nid once you've got a provisional license you can drive with a someone who's already passed i.e. your father. Go out to an airfield and experiment to see if you like it. That way you won't be a risk to others.

I would try it just in case, just to make sure if you don't like it/think that you will be hazardous. If you change your mind then great, but just try it out and see how you feel.

Give it a try. If you feel extremely uncomfortable, then just don't do it again.

Its entirely up to you Nid. If you are very nervous about driving, but decide to give it a go. Find some quiet back streets to practice on. I can say first hand I was absolutely terrible when I first start driving, because I was so deafly afraid of making mistakes, which is ironic as that fear caused me to make all those mistakes.

No everyone takes to driving at the same rate. Take it slow, and slowly build up your confidence driving. but again, its up to you whether you want to drive or not.

Well, I'll give it a try.

Should I prove to be a living, walking nuke, what other methods of transport would you feel be safer?

depending on where you live, you should be able to catch a bus or train to where ever you need to go. but if you live in a smaller town, a bike is always a good route

There is no shame in not having a driver's license. I have friends of all ages that do not have one and rely on family or friends to drive them wherever public transport won't get them to.

On a personal note, I would recommend doing it just so you have a license in case you ever find yourself in a situation where the designated driver is unavailable.

Of course, do take your time and start testing it out on parking lots or the open field as suggested before. I myself am not a too confident driver because in every curve I realize 'I'm driving a death machine', but I'm glad I have a license because it allows me to just hop into my car and drive off.

Honestly Nid, you sound like a potentially good driver. It's really not too hard to drive, and you strike me as a serious and careful driver. Simply not being an idiot when driving actually puts you ahead of most American drivers at least. Good luck to you, my friend.

But in regards to driving, if you don't like it, don't do it. If you have to travel some place far away, that's something you have to deal with.

You either overcome your fear or sit in the comfort zone.

Some people aren't mentally fit to drive a vehicle but any person working at the DMV would detect it right away.

They're not doing that great of a job, though.

I would love to be able to drive a car, it is just I am legally not allowed to because a) I have no licence, and b) my eyesight is too bad to even get a licence at this point. I would give anything to be able to experience the world with good eyesight, my philosophy on this sort of thing is if you can, do. You only live once, make the most of it.

Yeah, but one won't even live that long if they cannot control the thing.

As I say, I shall attempt such, but I belive the lessons will backfire somehow.

I might just have to aqcuaint myself with the public transport system otherwise.

Anyway, this thread's services are over, I can see what the general consensus is. Thank you for your advice.
