Monster Hunter Tri Discussion

Post by Red-Indigo on Fri Apr 01, 2011 9:05 am

Monster Hunter Tri is a game for the wii. Before you let that put you off, watch this:

Spoiler:

Before this game I felt the wii was for mini games and the like, but this game made the whole wii system so worthwhile.

In short, you fight monsters and by doing so you can upgrade your stuff to erm... fight monsters better Neutral Although it seems repetitive, it's highly addictive, not to mention that not one single fight is the same, as the AI on the monsters is superb and grants you a large range of advantages and disadvantages.

I think the best aspect of this game is the online play. Offline is fun with a slight story line, but its so much more fun when you go online with friends, or even randoms and work as a team. There are even 3 additional bosses online, the whole online thing is very well planned.

So, if you play tri, or just want to discuss monster hunter, this is the place.

------------
Monster Hunter Tricks and Tips:

In the spoiler below are just random tips n tricks to help certain things go more smoothly.

Tips n Tricks you might not know:

- Crouching before carving/gathering cancels the standing animation meaning a faster gather. Great for Jhen or any situation where you need to be quick!

- The cat statues are for getting stolen items back. It can take a while for stolen goods to appear.

- Taking a mega demon drug and immeadiatly afterward, a might pill, gives the maximum attack boost possible. Same for armour skin and adamant seeds.

- Knowing the elemental weaknesses helps with monsters, but somtimes if a weapon has higher raw damage, its best to go for their secondary weakness.

- If you pop a smoke bomb, the monster is unlikley to see you, so you can trap it or move away.

- If you use a dung bomb, hit the lowest threat, it will be more likley to go to another area. Good example, qurupeco and Jho. Make sure to paintball it first!

- Bombs, despite their animation, do not cause fire damge. Instead they do a third kind of damage called flat damage. Where they will do a set amount of damage to the Hitzone they hit first. It depends on the hitzone and monster how much damage they do, but it will always be the same for that zone and monster.

- Bombs can be detonated in various ways. If you use a lance, guard and poke. You can use a small barrel bomb to do a staggered detonation. You can also use a stone or a paintball to detonate them from afar. If you are feeling gutsy you can kick them too Razz

- Waiting in area 2 of the flooded forest for Royal Ludroth is a good idea. You can place some bombs in the entrance (from/to area 4) where he will appear. Detonate them to cause a large amount of damage.

- Bring a frog to area 4 of the flooded frest when fighting Gobul, you can fish him out. If you lay bombs just a little left of the entrance to 7, when he lands you can detonate them, causing massive damage. You can also put a pitfall in the 'green' area here, to bomb him again. Don't put it where he lands, you will miss the free struggle he gives when fished out!

- Waiting in the entrance (from area 1) for area 2 for barioth means that he should land on the ledge beside you then fly down without noticing you. He's easy to sneak up on, so you can place the pitfall trap right under him before he even notices. Subquest complete!

- If a monster runs off to sleep, wait a little while so its snoozing. You can then either place bombs at a part you wish to break, or if you have no bombs, use a powerful attack (like a lvl 3 GS charge)

- Evasion +1/2 extends the time period that you are invunerable for while rolling. Evade Up just extends the distance that you roll away. (Weee!)

- If you sonic bomb Blos, pitfall trap Bari or another flying wyvern, they tend to hover after escaping for a second. Use a flashbomb to bring them down again and you get double the free hits!

- If you have strong enough armour, allowing a monster to pin you means others can get free hits, in some cases it might even drop a shiny.

- In the city, if you sit where the golden bell is you can host a meal, using a voucher that you own. All other players must select 'mooch a meal' to benefit from it. Helps with large battles, like Jhen/Jho/Ala or double quests.

- Although a bit of a cheat... If you are in area 5 and are a bowgunner you can stand facing where the area 8 is. If some more people who bowgun jump from area 8, as you see them appear, shoot them with pellet shot, they will be pushed onto a 'secret' ledge. They can safely gun from here, bringing down anything in area 5. (*AHEM* world eater Jho)

Games to play (aside from the actual objective):

Okay, I didnt think of these myself, but Ive seen them and thought, if I ever get a wireless keyboard, we could play them some time, just for a laugh.

- Monster Protector Tri.

Type it in google and there is a webpage explaining the rules. Long story short. A team (it says four but could be three or two) goes on a quest, only difference is one member has to sabotage the hunt! The other people play naked with limited resources and have to kill the monster. If all other people cart, the protector wins, if the monster dies the hunters win. All manner of tomfoolery can ensue, from flashbomb spamming, stealing resources, upswinging, bombing. Loads of stuff.

- PVP time attack

Hard to play at low rank. Basicly one full team, or two people, decide on a quest. It must be a double monster quest, where both monsters show at the same time. One team paintballs their monster and the other just has to keep track, this is to avoid confusion. The aim of the game is to kill the monster faster than the other team. Not cap, kill. If the monsters go in the same area, dung bombs must be used to seperate them, or it would be unfair. Looser has to buy lunch Razz

-Devil of the hill

Saw this on youtube, by earvucanan or whoever. Basicly, he chooses a Jho quest, in D.Island and obviously hosts a meal so everyone gets explorer. Once in the secret area, you have to bash someone off with upswings and the like. He used all SA, but you could use other weapons I guess. Jho is down in area 7 and once one person gets upswung to him, the rest stop and watch... lol. Obviously, this usually carts people so the last one of a team of four wins (and you fail the quest) But with a team of 3, you could all team up on Jho afterward.

-----------

Monster Hunter Terms and Acroynms: (still in progress)
Because of the fast paced action and need to communicate there are lots of terms that players use. This can be confusing if you just want to join in the conversation, so here's a list:

Gong: The Gong on a dragonship (usually means, hit it now!)
Ballista: A weapon on a dragonship, or the ammo for it.
Binder: Special ammo, for fighting Jhen.
Upswing: An attack that the SA and hammer can use. If used badly, it can interrupt players and send them flying. Trolls do it on purpose. If used well, it can save lives XD
Lance Charge A weak move by the lance. Dashes a long disatance and is used to cover ground. Can badly interrupt players if hit with it.
Trip: Somthing the LS does and occasionally the Sns and BG. Interrupts a player and can cause them to fall over. Both upswinging, charging and tripping is done at the end of a quest for fun.

Communications/Misc:

Kill: Don't capture it, kill it. Usually for a specific reward.
Mats: Materials either for or from a quest.
Mob: Refers to a 'boss' Monster
Guru: Refers to a skill that allows hunters to see if the mob is ready to cap Wink
Ping: By pressing - then + on the classic controller or 2 then + on wiimote you can 'ping' a signal, usually to alert people a monster is in your area. Or that you are going to lay a trap, or have done so and need people to come to you to lure the mob.
Carve: An item obtained from killing a monster. Method of obtaining that item.
Noob Carve Not nice to say, but refers to when someone immeadatly goes to carve a tail/scalp thats broken off. Even though the monster is still there.
Hunter Rank: Abbreviated as HR, the number of ranks depends on exp points.
LR: Low rank. Players just starting to play online. (under rank 31)
HR: High rank (players over rank 31) or Hunter rank
Camp: Where you start in LR Quests. Somtimes heard by others telling a player to go back there and heal/stay. Considered a bit rude in that context. Somtimes asking a player to bring mats back. (ie, camp 4 trap)
Pin When a monster manages to get a hold and tries to eat you.
Wall: Some monters get stuck in walls/areas, gives free hits. Hence the name.
SB/SB'ing: Sleep Bomb, a tactic where the monster is put to sleep and bombed, to inflict more damage.
Cart/carted: Fainting. Reason is, you get taken away by cats on a cart... Yeah.
Triple Cart: Failing a quest (only 3 faints allowed) usually by someone fainting thrice.
Naked Not literally, but fighting with no armour thus no defence or skills. Somtimes to be annoying, somtimes to challenge themselves.
Skill: A skill active through an armour.
Tali: Talisman, somthing you wear to boost skill points, in hope of activating a skill.
Claw/tail/horns/chin etc: A breakable part on a monster, usually shouted to signal to break it as priority in order to obtain a specific reward.
Endgame: Referring to a weapon that can no longer be upgraded, is maxed out.
Sphere: Armour Sphere, used to upgrade pieces of armour.
Shiny A rare special coloured pokem... Somthing a monster drops under special conditions. Picking it up gives you an item.
Crown Gold and silver crowns are awarded as a record of meeting a paticularly large or small monster (yes they do differ in size) with gold being rare and silver uncommon.
Shard: No not shardna Wink a rustshard, somtimes gives special weapons.
Urgent: A quest that a player must post and complete before moving up to the next set of quests.
*/star: 1,2,3,4,5 or 6 * Quests. Increases in difficulty, each with an urgent in between.
and my personal favourite:
DEVILJHOWNED! Usually in good jest, when someone carts from encountering the Jho.
Not so Nice
Spoiler:

I don't suggest using these terms to people online, but you might come across them.

Troll: Obvious. But the only monster you cant kill. They might appear in any quest, if they think you are a bad player or they are elitist or if they are just stupid. Some people troll if the encounter a 'leech'. Usually they will upswing you, lance charge you, place small barrel bombs at innappropriate times and somtimes fight naked or die on purpose. Some people might even PM you rude stuff or nasty stuff. Best just to leave a room and block them if you encounter one. Don't feed it.

Leech: Different from the troll in that they might be young or inexperianced players. Some do it to annoy, but usually when asked to stop they do. Leeching is when someone stays at camp or runs round the map not fighting the monster. They might even collect materials while you do the work or run in to carve when somthing is broken or dead. Best thing to do is ask if they are okay with what to do. If not you can offer some advice. If they are you should ask them to help you and not leech. If they are rude its best to treat as a troll.

Noob!: People often bat this about. Its not nice because MH has a wierd learning curve, in that there is always somthing new. It's pretty noobish to be nasty to people who are in the same position you were when you started. Keep this in mind if someone calls you a noob too Wink

Things to remember: Kevin and Shardna probably know all of this in the entre OP, but in case anyone is thinking about getting the game. The online players are usually very good/nice. Somtimes you come across people who are unsure of what to do or not nice. There are some people who think they are better than everyone, but thats to be expected. Usually its a great experiance online. Its good to remember there are young or new players too, so always try and be tolerant, offer advice and don't be afraid to ask questions yourself. If someone is nasty or rude, its best to just move on and don't waste your gaming time on them. Above all, its just a game Smile

That game indeed looks very cool. Nice graphics. Not sure if I would enjoy the gameplay though.

And the monster around 01:50 is somewhat familiar, Red. ;P

I love playing that game online the most. I've always teamed up with random hunters. Sometimes it would be french, spanish and german but I always end up teaming with either a french group or a german group. XD

Haha, yea, its barioth, one of my fave monsters in the game.

I know what you mean about the gameplay, I was unsure at first. It isn't a game where you can expect to win straight away, you progress but you might still need to go back and do more or learn certain things. I have over 100 kills on a couple of bosses.

Each weapon brings a new element of gameplay too, like using a bowgun, you have to learn to support team members. If you like combat games and building up skill its great, if you prefer platform or pick up and play games, its less great XD

Me too ^^ yeah, its good and bad, I have a few german people I meet with on occasion, but I have also recieved hostility for being english, I can't speak german but when someone refuses to play because there is an 'englander' I think its obvious Laughing Never come across anyone spanish so far, but I play at odd times.

What rank are you? Im 30 at the moment, lol. Waiting to do jhen, should be okay though, I've repelled him once when I was HR 19 I think. If you PM me your name and code I can do the same and we might be able to play sometime?

Looks like a cool game. Graphics look awesome, but alas I do not own a wii. I've considered for a long time getting a wii. I don't know what everyone has against it. Sure its not typically for serious games, but I love games where you don't have to think alot. Plus I really miss super smash bros.

The enviroments looks pretty cool. Is it an open world sort of game, or is it a mission by mission sort of game?

@Rem: Well it's sorta like both. It's kinda hard to explain really.

@Indy: That would be awesome. I'll try get it sometime today. ^^

Finally got past that offline mission on capturing Rathian. When I came across it the first time, she saw me and roared leaving me unable to move for a few seconds. I hacked away at her like mad sometimes dodging, sometimes got hurt. At one point she cornerd me then attacked me in succssion causing me to die (nice..). Second time I was ready. Rathian happend to be in the bug area which was a nice advantage for me. Hacked away at her again until she started to limp away from me. I figured she was at the bigger bug nest area so off I went. Rathian was there alright but unfortualy the area happend to have those black cat theifs as well. Luckly I hid behind a rock for a bit just enough for the Rathian to see me still. She got caught in my trap. With a few traqulisers, she fell asleep and it was over! ILoveItPlz

I got this game too. It's awesome. I prefer the sword and shield myself (and the game reminds me of The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess's graphics).

Anyone wanting to go hunting, PM me (not sure if you can play between Europe and the U.S. though :/ ).

Post by Red-Indigo on Mon Apr 04, 2011 7:52 pm

Wow there's more people than I expected ^^ Spoilered my replies, because other wise it would be mahoosive. To anyone who plays; My Code is PWLG11 (I think, I'll double check) would love to meet up. I have my jhen mohran 3* Urgent up if anyone fancies coming along? I played through offline before online so thats why Im not High Rank yet Laughing

@Remi:
Spoiler:
The graphics are awesome. I think people dislike the wii because it has more 'fun' games on it rather than serious games, like PS and Xbox has halo and crysis etc. Monster hunter is odd, because you have a village or city when online, where you choose quests, farm, shop ect and the quests have an objective, and usually optional sub quests. They are massivly open though and leaves for a lot of individual style. You can also go to moga woods, which is outside the village and thats like an open world, with different monsters and conditions each day. So a bit of both really.

@Goober:
Spoiler:
It sucks, but the US and canada is on one server and EU and AUS is on another. Would have been fun to play with you, maybe if somone else here from the US plays you could meet them? Plus, I love the SnS one of my favourite weapons (along with Longswords and lances)

@Kevin:
Spoiler:
Yay! Would be great to meet up with you and shardna. I can't GS to save my life, too slow for me XD Im in lowrank at the moment, but if I spot you on, I'll PM you to add as a friend if thats kay? I agree the music is awesome, I like the volcano music the best I think.

@Shardna:
Spoiler:
Thanks, I've put mine at the top of this humunganoid post. My character name is Jade. I usually play either in the afternoons and somtimes around 7-12ish depending on who is using the TV XD

Oh, and well done on the ian! I've killed and captured so many of them now, its ridiculous, and all I want is a damned plate! I hate fighting her where those bugs and melynx are. They interfere so much! Once, I was laying a trap to capture her (in flooded forest) and a bnhabra came up and paralysed me, then she did her tail whip thing and caught me with the stump, while I was laying there, knocked me back and posioned me -_- haha, was funny though, if not annoying. She flew off after that too, so had to wait for the trap to explode before capping again... Laughing

Lastly, what are peoples fave weapon classes here? Does anyone bowgun. I'm trying but not terribly good at it yet XD

Intriguing and indeed, but I don't what some people have against casual games. The point of video games is to have fun. Why are some people so serious about gaming Mental ?

You can farm? like pigs or crops? Farmville with swords and monsters? Razz kidding, farmville is horrible. but what exactly do you farm?

well if I ever get a wii, I'll put it on my list of games to get. But on a uni student budget, that won't be any time soon.

I know, I have alot of fun on casual games, I think Monster Hunter is the only 'serious' game I play. I think some of it too, is that the wii has the capacity to do HD graphics, but nintendo rushed it out so never added it in. Cue wii 2. People think its a lesser system because of its rushed reputation.

Haha, it's no farmville. You have cats that farm for you, you just have to find the materials to farm, usually you need them to upgrade things or to combine with other materials to create equipment, like healing items and such. It's really important to keep it going, or you find you have to go foraging for the materials and that's not fun -_-

You don't farm animals (well you have a pig that you can dress up and play a game with, but that's it. Random I know.) you farm plants (obviously), mushrooms, honey and bugs. You have to give different fertilizers to get different effects. Like Super sized Dung gives normal results but using a saturnian trap makes a saturnian grow/appear and you can use it to trade with this dude that turns up occasionaly. (don't ask what a saturnian is, I have no idea!)

Yeah, wiis are fun, but pricey and on your budget probably a bit too pricey Sad If you do end up with one, this game is IMO a must have.

Ohhh, I missed you Sad I will be on tomorrow though, I'll just search everytime Im on lol, Im pretty random with when I am about.

I use the wiimote XD Which makes it harder to lance, which is why I rarely do. I have a smaller one though so its quicker to spin slash and what not.

What did you hunt this eve then?

Ooh, would love to see what you made, although I think Im subbed to you so probably will Smile

Back on topic; Razz

Its annoying when you disconnect or when the wifi is messing around. I remember doing my Lagi urgent, he was on land and drooling, tail cut, chest and horns broken. I think he was like 2 or 3 hits away from death when everyone stopped moving, I carried on comboing and then there was a continuous ---- exited text. Then I exited. I was soooo annoyed because I was with a really good team as well!

As for meeting up, Im sure we will sometime. Like I said, I'll be on weds (today) at a round 7.30 ish so I'll make a search for you two. If you aren't then I'll try and get some time friday. I usually play fairly regularly, but this weeks been hectic. We have each other's codes now so should be easy to meet.
Oh and that reminds me. Would people who play want their codes and info on the OP? Spoilered of course. I understand if not, just thought it'd be easy if people wanted to join in the fun ^^

BIG FAT EDIT: will be on at quater to eight ish. Hopefully will see a friendly face or two, if not don't worry Smile

It was alot of fun, thank you shardna and Kevin! Sorry I wasnt great on the los, it was my sisters bed time so I was a little distracted Laughing The jhen runs were amazing too, such a good team. Shardna did great with the gong and nator.

I am happy I got to HR, I stayed in a solo room for a little bit after you left and solo'd the G.jaggi quest and did those snnoying harvest turs and bug slaying ones. Suprised me how much a G.Jaggi can now take out of me lol. Didn't take long too do it though. Looking foward to running from jho when I do the playing with fire quest XD

Thanks Kevin, It'll be handy to have someone I know when doing Ala. Its going to be hard, I know that much! But still, a long way to go before I face him Laughing
