Wrong Number
I just got a phone call from someone who apparently called the wrong number. Now, I don't get that many phone calls in general, so it is a bit of a surprise when someone calls me as I usually know who would and in what time frame. On top of that, it was a blocked number, so I can't even find out just who called - I really hate that, because it turns into that mystery that you will never ever figure out until you die.
Anyhow, do you get a lot of people calling the wrong number and how do you deal with them? Or what do you say or do when you're calling the wrong number?

Re: Wrong Number
All the time.
The stupidest one was about 4 months ago.
I was alone in the house and a woman called asking for someone called Karen or Karell (something like that, can't quite remember).
She asked "is (name) there?"
I said sorry wrong number and she said sorry and hung up. Bout 5 minutes later, the phone rings again. Same woman "Is (name) there". I said she called the wrong number again and again she said sorry and hung up.
Then 20 or so minutes rolled by until I got the third called "Is (name) there?". I just told her she must have the wrong number written down. She didn't call back after that, so I'm assuming she figured out what ever she had written down was wrong.
First time. fine. a mistaken. can happen to anyone.
Second time. Alright, I guess it could be another simple mistake, but at that point you should realize you have the wrong number down and not call the same number a third time........
I've gotten more than a couple random people ring the house twice, but she's the only one who has rung 3 times.
Oddly I've gotten a wrong number on my mobile before . Seems harder to botch a mobile number, but I guess the same rules apply to a normal wrong number.

Re: Wrong Number
I can't remember having called the wrong number ever.
I have, however, picked up calls that were addressed to someone else, as well as receiving messages that were not meant for me.
I never pick up when it's a blocked number. If the number displays and I understand it was a mistake, I tell them they probably have the wrong number and politely hang up.
At some point, a couple of years ago, I got a message ordering me to give back some CDs...? I said it was wrong number, but they kept pushing until I ended up ignoring them and they gave up. I have a feel, though, it was someone I know playing a prank on me.

My sister mis-dialed 4 times, to the same guy.
Eventually he got mad and told her not to call ever again.

I accidentally dialed 911 by accident.
At school the extension to call out of school is "9-1", so I guess I accidentally pressed 1 an extra time...

Re: Wrong Number
I get this occasionally. I usually ask them what number they are trying to contact, and if they give a number different to mine I point out the mistake and if they give my number, I tell them that their number is at least 3 years out of date in their records.
THRICE I have had the wrong house as someone knocked on the door looking for someone else. Once was the police who thought they were on a different road . Once was an undercover officer looking for someone who had not lived here for at least 4 years and once was a takeaway, who made the same mistake as the earlier police.

Re: Wrong Number
Lol I've ended up calling the wrong number a couple times, after accidentally writing the number down wrong.
Once I tried calling me cousin and almost thought I had the number wrong because he sounded so different over the phone. But I guess phones have a way of distorting things like that sometimes (like I've noticed I often sound like five years younger on the phone. Grr.)
And there have been a whack of calls to my house too over the years.

No, MST, directed them to the correct house.
I am excellent at recognising voices, I have won contests with actual money as prizes for it. I seem to instinctively understand the difference in timbre a telephone can give you on the phone

Re: Wrong Number
I phoned home once but got the number wrong, called the woman my mother Think she had a heart attack lol.
Re: Wrong Number
Ive called the wrong number loads, usually because of phoning around at work and finding wrong numbers on the internet. Its no biggie for me, I just apologise.
I have had very little wrong numbers to my house, although we did have a persistant person asking for jerry or someone... As well as people thinking our number was a bespoke curtain business XD

Re: Wrong Number
I've only ever rung a wrong number twice. Problem was, one of the times the person who picked up sounded a lot like the person I was calling so for about half a minute I thought my friend was just messing with me, until the person said "seriously, sorry, wrong number" and hung up.
Normally when I am dialing a number I go painfully slow as it 1.................................8........................................................5.....................................4 etc etc
So its harder for me to make a mistake unless the number I have been given is wrong.

Re: Wrong Number
I once had a message left on my phone from someone telling me that the 'package' had arrived and would be on its way shortly.
Other than that, we get loads of post from the people who lived here before us, both the most recent and the one before that.

Re: Wrong Number
Im painfully slow at dialing now too, although my numbers are awful. I get things like 24 or 32 mixed up as 42 and 32 or 6 as 9 so on...
Also, Mysteryem, be careful of messages like that. It was common a while back to phone saying they were from UPS or the like and to call back to arrange re delivery, of course taking some vital details... Not nice.

Re: Wrong Number
I have that numbers thing, too, Red. In fact, I have dyscalculia, which gave me a lot of hardship in math back in school. I understood the solution of the problems but the minute numbers were involved I freaked.
This is why I triple check when I dial phone numbers to make sure I got the right one.
Also, it doesn't help when in (Swiss) German you say the last digit before the first, as in five-and-thirty instead of thirty-five.

Re: Wrong Number
I wasn't sure if i should post this here or in the user announcements thread.
Well any hoosen, something very very odd happened to me when I tried to call a friend on he weekend. Also I swear to god this is what actually happened.
Right well on saturday my friend had apparently tried to call while I was in the shower, so I decided to call directly afterwards.
I have a prepaid phone and don't have any special deals for calls, so calling from my mobile is expensive. And as I was at home, I decided it would be a lot cheaper to call from my home phone.
I didn't know my friend number off by heart, so I looked it up on my mobile and dialed it on the home phone, or atleast I thought I did.
So I press call and I hear all the bleep boops you hear before the phone starts ringing, but I didn't hear any rings. There was just a long pause and then................ I kid you not............this is what I heard.
Thats right... the peanut butter jelly time song.
I was in such a confused daze, I stood there listening to it for about 30 seconds before hanging up.
I don't know why I didn't share this earlier, but once again I am honest when i say this happened.
I have no idea what I miss dialed to get the peanut butter jelly time song. I re-dialed my friends number and got a hold of him the second time around.
Has this ever happened to anyone else, or could someone explain what exactly I dialed into?

Re: Wrong Number
Maybe your friend was prank receiving you by playing the song on the stereo and holding his phone against the speaker.

But there are two problems. There was no ring, It literally just went straight to the peanut butter jelly time song. Also my friend is not very internet savy and knows practically nothing about internet memes. He had no idea what the peanut butter jelly time song was until I explained it too him.
My only thought is that maybe I accidentally rang a joke number of some nature. Sort of like those fake numbers girls give guys they aren't interested in that sends them to a message that says "rejected" over the phone.
I wish i could remember exactly what I dialed, but when I first put in the numbers I did it rather hastily without looking at what I'd put in.

Doesn't your home phone have re-dial or last dialed numbers?

For some reason I hadn't considered that.... Man I'm brilliant with technology. Well I'm pretty sure re-dial would most likely be gone else in the house has almost certainly made a call. But now i'm wondering. I'm not sure if our home phone has a call log or not. It has a bunch of functions I've never looked into. I'll check tomorrow. Hopefully it does. I want answers to my confusion!
Re: Wrong Number
Sometimes people can set up their voicemail to play a song instead of the normal tone and such. Maybe their phone was off, they had it set to do that, and you called, going straight to voicemail? That's all I can think of.

That had crossed my mind as a possibility, but I know my friend's voicemail and he has the typical "leave your message at the tone" message, but also I looked at the number I put in and I'm confused.
I'm not sure how it works in other countries but here in Australia, mobile numbers always begin with "04", but for some reason often when you write a number into a mobile the 04 will change to "+614". It mean the same as 04, and t just does that. No idea why.
Apparently in my haste I put in the 614 way instead of 04, but the rest of the phone number was correct. I'm confused as the number itself I dialed is correct but instead of putting 04 I put 614. don't know what doing that would have made a difference or what I called as to my knowledge 614 isn't an area code. All phones in Australia begin with an area code like 02 or 03 or 04 not 61.
Re: Wrong Number
Got me, then. I have no clue.
