Mount & Blade
I had to make a topic for this game. It's definitely one of my favourite games and I've only been playing the demo so far.
I've already ordered the core game and its two expansions through amazon and am looking forward to receive it.
What is Mount and Blade?
Mount&Blade is a medieval, single-player, open-ended, action role-playing video game for Windows, developed by the Turkish company TaleWorlds, and published by Paradox Interactive. (From Wiki)
Gameplay:
Mount&Blade is a single-player, action oriented role-playing game without any fantasy elements, which takes place in a medieval land named Calradia. The game features a sandbox gameplay style, in which there is no storyline present. The player is able to join one of the five battling factions, fight as a mercenary, assume the role of an outlaw, or take a neutral side. (From Wiki)
Features:
This game features one of the most realistic fighting modes I´ve ever seen, especially with ragdoll-like effect for fallen foes. One of Mount and Blade´s main attractions is the mounted combat, which really feels as if you were there, taking place in the combat, striking enemies from your horse with a melee weapon or bow/crossbow. Although it has no storyline, it has several different quests and a huge map, with lots of different types of interactions you can establish with people. You may capture and sell prisoners, hire recruits from villages, train peasants against outlaws, etc, etc.
Expansions:
These two expansions add several new elements, which make the game more interesting. They are standalone expansions, which means you do not need the core game in order to play them. You might as well just purchase Warband and With Fire and Sword, rather than the first.

I´m really happy about this game. Here's a preview for you, EuroSporeons.

A most excellent topic! I discovered this game only a couple of weeks ago, and it wasn't long before I bought it. I bought it through download, because I couldn't wait several days for a delivery.
It only took a few minutes before I realized this would become one of the greatest games I have ever played. There's nothing like charging into the enemy ranks, riding alongside your troops that you've recruited and trained.
The graphics aren't the most modern, but I don't care sh*t about that. The gameplay is unique. It's the only one of it's kind as far as I know.

Re: Mount & Blade
Im not a fan of RP and not really a fan of medieval settings, but the fact this is so open is really attractive.
I've always wanted to see a game that was sandbox ish but with combat, especially mounted combat, looks like it would be a welcome addition to any one's game collection!

Looks fun. The environments look great and the combat looks like it would be fun, especially mounted. An online feature on that game would be awesome. Looks like the sort of game that would do really well if it had an online feature.
I shall keep it in my mind. Maybe a medieval fight game to pre-occupy my time before Skyrim comes out

Re: Mount & Blade
There is a multiplayer feature, but not campaign related. Merely single matches (Capture the Flag, Team Deathmatch, etc.) that people can partake in.
The third game, With Fire and Sword, is set about 300 hundred years later in Eastern Europe, with firearms and fancy clothes being introduced to the game.
By the way, you may download the games and play trial version, giving you the right taste of Mount and Blade free of charge. It´s what I´m doing while waiting for the games to arrive.
Link for Warband Download.
Can´t find the link I´ve used for the other one, but you may find it through a google search.

I woke up not long ago and had a sudden urge to answer this.
I don't know what improvements Skyrim is bringing, but it is very likely a great game.
Nevertheless, based on my experience with Oblivion, I have to say I am much happier about the Mount & Blade series, especially because of the combat type. In Oblivion, you can barely fight alongside allies without the constant concern of smacking them on the head, as they have a tendency to run in front of you. >_< I also think fighting in Oblivion gets dull over a while. Whenever I was going around closing Oblivion gates, my sentiment of annoyance and boredom was directly proportional to the number of enemies.
Don't get me wrong, I still find Oblivion a very interesting and addictive game, with a cool story set up, quests, etc.
But, in my opinion, M&B is able to bring combat to a whole new level. Although it is not entirely realistic, it's one of the best approaches I've ever seen. It is usually a pleasure to run into enemies (unless you're outnumbered or outgeared greatly), since the fighting in this game is a charm.

Re: Mount & Blade
@Ark: Yes, it's quite surprising how fun it is to run down even only a few bandits with your knights when you come across them. The mounted combat is one of the best things about M&B - it's the first game I have played where it's actually working well. I quite like that it actually takes some skill to fight from horseback as well - I remember I had to spend more than a little while on the very handy training fields before I was able to swiftly kill enemies from the back of my mount.
Your choice of weaponry is nice as well. Swords, spears, bows, crossbows, lances... And all of it can be used from horseback. Firing your bow at your enemies while riding is awesome, although very hard.

Don't forget maces, axes, knives, throwing daggers and fists. And pistols, rifles and grenades for the third game.
I'm still waiting for my games to arrive. It's taking forever.
I've been messing around with the demos this last week and a half, but it always stops me from playing when it starts getting more interesting. ><
The multiplayer also seems nice, which is another thing I'm looking forward to try.
Also, regarding Mount & Blade: With Fire and Sword, I was quite happy to see that many things there were taken from the real world.
Like the Polish Winged Hussars.

Yeah, those too. And rocks, cleavers and whatnot.
I don't know how much I want to play With Fire and Sword though. Guns and rifles don't appeal that much to me, I prefer the purely medieval era.

They are quite realistic, as in: terrible aim and half a century to reload. It can be frustrating, but a well placed shot often means a massive amount of damage.
You can download the demo and try it out free of charge.

I kind of have in the OP.
It's definitely a game I don't regret buying. It's quite addictive and fun, if you're into this style. ^^

Tell me a single type of game where that sentence can't be applied Because it basically says "It's fun if you find it fun."

Call of Duty: Black Ops
Runescape
Halo
That is, of course, my opinion. I believe we all have games we dislike within a style we like.
Let's try not to get off-topic here. ^^

Or you could just get it for the TF2 hats.
If you're in to that sort of thing.
