Brain teasers, puzzles and riddles.

Post by LordRemington on Sat Jul 09, 2011 1:47 am

Thought about this while looking through a test exam for the IQish UMAT test I have coming up soon.

Some of the brain teasers in it a pretty difficult so I thought, why not share em'.

Basic point of this thread. Post brain teasers or puzzles or riddles you've heard of (or ones you've stumbled across) and try and solve ones others have posted (no cheating and looking them up Razz). If you've figured out the answer to a brain teaser or puzzle, feel free to post it, but make sure to put it in spoilers so others can try and figure it out on their own.

Also feel free to link any sites that offer interesting brain teasers or puzzles.

Here are two from my mock UMAT test. (these ones aren't that hard if you think about the answers carefully). I'll post the answers tomorrow, but I think you should be able to get these two easily.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Suppose that one of the following four statements is true

Statement I None of these four statements is true
Statement II The previous statement is true
Statement III The previous statement is false
Statement IV The previous statement is false

Which of the four statements is true?

A. Statement I
B. Statement II
C. Statement III
D. Statement IV

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Three Glasses, labelled X,Y and Z are on a table. Each is exactly half full of water. Two of the glasses can each hold twice as much as the third one. The small glass may be X or Y or Z.

Half of the water in glass X is poured into glass Y. Then, half of the water now in glass Y is poured into glass Z. Finally, half of the water now in glass Z is poured into glass X.

Which of the following statements is true.

A This can be done without spilling any water if the small glass is glass X
B This can be done without spilling any water if the small glass is glass Y
C This can be done without spilling any water if the small glass is glass Z
D This cannot be done without spilling any water

Spoiler:
Statement II and B

Another one: suppose we have an odd number people, larger or equal to 3. Each one holds a yogurt in their hand, and each person has only ONE person that is closest to him. So, noone has any doubt as to who is the person that is the closest to him. Each person throws a yogurt to the person closest to them. Prove that for any number of people (odd an larger or equal to three) at least one person won't have a yogurt thrown at him.

It is in fact Statement III because if Statement II is correct, that makes Statement III wrong. Or at least I think is correct Unsure

Spoiler:
I think you're right, Vek. I think I approached this the wrong way. We have to try each statement seperately, and see if accepting its truth results to others being true or itself being false. III is (probably) the only one that fits this examination.

Exactly what I did my friend.

There are some good brain teasers that I remember reading in joke books and other erroneous reading materials.

The classic example is of a man walking into a bar, going up to the barman and asking for a glass of water, at which point the barman pulls out a gun, the man says thank you, and leaves. Why did he just say thank you and leave?

Well that's a whole different thing, I wouldn't call it a riddle, or a brain teaser, because there can several answers and there's simply not enough data to solve it one way. (I know the specific story).

Spoiler:
Slime you were right about the second question and Pat you were indeed correct about the first question.

You were right about the first question Cwar, but the answer to the second one is B.

I'd explain the answers to them, but its difficult to explain without writing a long paragraph about it.

Thats a bit of a noodle scratcher Pat. While silly, my best guess would be.

Spoiler:
It was a water gun Razz

Here's one I heard a while ago.

A man and his son are driving in a car. They get into a serious accident and both are badly injured. They are taken away in ambulances to different hospitals.

When the boy arrives at the hospital, he is taken into surgery. The surgeon walks in, and in shock says "I cannot operate on him, for he is my son".

How is this possible?

Indeed you are correct Ark. Works best actually when it said verbally. It sadly confuses most people despite the fact the answer should be obvious.

I heard this one a while ago, the answer to it initially confused me, but it made sense once I thought about it.

Riddle
It's more powerful than God.
It's more evil than the devil.
The poor have it.
The rich need it.
If you eat it, you'll die.

What is it?

Interesting idea Remi, eithyer you have genuinely not heard that one before or you are being funny. There is a "medical"£ reason behind it Wink

Yeah, Remi, that is another of the sort I was thinking of with the barman one I posted. The sort of brain teaser that is highly logical when you know the answer.

Side note, found a link to this thread on twitter just now, and not from anyone who is registered (as far as I am aware) Shocked

I genuinely haven't heard it before Razz either that or its been a long time since hearing it and I've forgotten the answer. It sounds sort of familiar but I can't remember. I try as best as I can to figure them out before looking up and answer. Medical reason you say *puts on thinking cap*.... the answer still hasn't come to me yet Sad

There was a link to this on twitter? Shocked Weirdness.
