Re: Your First-Person Shooter, Arcade and Platform Games
I have most of the Halo games (not ODST), Battlefield: Bad Company 2 and Crysis 2 for the xbox. I haven't actually gotten around to try the multiplayer in Crysis though, since I realized during the campaign that I'm not a huge fan of FPS after all.

Halo is one of the only FPS games I have liked. Most other shooters are forgettable.

Team Fortress 2
Killing Floor
Borderlands
Left for Dead 1&2
Half Life 2 series
If you count games that don't actually have guns or too much violence, then also:
Portal 1&2
Minecraft
When I was small and had my first ever pc, I had the original Half Life. I was too scared to play it because of the headcrabs, and eventually I lost the CD :/Haven't been playing much FPS games lately though. Got into Spiral Knights.

Major developments for you TF2 fans (myself included):
Valve has just announced that TF2 has gone Free to Play, right when they decided to release the new "Uber Update" and the long-awaited "Meet the Medic" short.
All I have to say about this is this: THIS. IS. HUGE.

Portal isn't an FPS either, it is more about puzzles isn't it?

It's only a FPS in gameplay but it still counts as one.Vektrix wrote:LordRemington wrote:WoityuizE wrote:

FPS means Shooting, not the perspective from which the game is played in my opinion. To be an FPS in my view the primary view should be First-Person and your primary job is to shoot stuff. As far as I can tell, Portal is more of a Puzzle game. I seem to remember Myst being FP, but not have any shooting, I'd consider them Adventure games, personally.
However, there are a ton of games that some would think is one thing, others another and even more people think is something else. Then again, there are games out there that fit into more than one.
Re: Your First-Person Shooter, Arcade and Platform Games
Myst is a point-and-click adventure, which is also played in FP, in Portal however, you still use the portal gun to "shoot" your way out of the testing facility.

Re: Your First-Person Shooter, Arcade and Platform Games
For me an FPS is based on combat (from 1st person perspective obviously) I think as long as you have enemies to shoot at its still classed as an FPS.
I think portal would fit into this category but alot more loosley than other games. I think it does fit more niecely into puzzle but like Vek said they can fit into different categories. Especially so now alot of game developers are trying to make broadbased games.
Anyways. FPS aren't really my thing but... Here goes what I've owned:
PS (one and two)
Resident evil (cant remember which one... its got Nemesis in anyways)
Aliens (So scary...)
Alien Ressurection (not so scary)
Doom (ahaha)
Lara croft...
Wii
Red steel
PC
Oni
Lara Croft
This other one where you were in a fantasy alien world with aline dragon type things... I don't know what it was called though. Didint play it much.
I played this game that was free online once. That was okay, but I can't remember what it was called. Used to play it with Aap.
Im soon to get TF2, now that it's free. Such a cheap skate.

Re: Your First-Person Shooter, Arcade and Platform Games
Free TF2 has only 50 item slots (while there are more than 85 non-reskin weapons), you can only receive items from trades and can only receive gifts. Any 1 purchase will get you premium access. Kind of dumb considering you can just buy a map stamp for 79 cents (which also gets you a free hat).

Re: Your First-Person Shooter, Arcade and Platform Games
I was just thinking regarding FPS games, many of them are set in a realistic scenario where you play a soldier or mercenary in a war-like situation. With that in mind, would that count as a simulation game as well?

Re: Your First-Person Shooter, Arcade and Platform Games
By that logic, all games are simulations, since they are putting you in a hypothetical scenario while you have a fictionary role to play.
I would say most FPS games should not be ranked as simulation. Perhaps action and/or adventure, but simulation usually brings more the idea of a less war-like situation.
And by the way, I agree with Vektrix regarding Portal not being an FPS game. While it is first person view, the main focus of the game isn't shooting things with the purpose of killing them.

Re: Your First-Person Shooter, Arcade and Platform Games
TF2 is now free to download and play. The only downside of not throwing money at it is not having all the available weapons, but most of those are not an upgrade over the stock weapons anyway.

Re: Your First-Person Shooter, Arcade and Platform Games
Well, I still havent downloaded TF2.
Partly because of my poor laptop memory and secondly, it quotes 11 hours to download. All. Day.
No thanks
Going on games you regret buying; Red steel.
Luckily I bought it at a lower price. I thought it would be fun and for the most part its okay, but not what it was hyped up to be. The mechanics are all clunky and frequently bug up. The characters aren't exactly endearing and the levels are a bit, well, sameish.
Maybe its just my dislike for the FPS genre in general, I don't know, but its not a game I'd recommend.
