I got 53. Phew, just out of the range of social anxiety. Although not all of the avoidance questions were necessarily accurate. For instance the one about public telephones, I put avoidance at usually, because I never have a need to use them as in modern days most people have a cell phone. and drinking with others in public, if your not much of a drinker you might put avoidance at 3 even though its not a social anxiety, its just you don't like to drink.

I think it should just have a fear column rather than avoidance as there might be other reasons you avoid doing things besides having a social anxiety.

I got 14, i guess mine was quite low cos being a teenager stuff like writing whilst being observed is unavoidable, and i've also got 11 years of acting experience under my belt so i'm quite good at controlling things like nervousness. I also don't have much of a temper or anything like that so i'm able to control my feelings pretty well.

I've heard about the scale before through studying psychology, it's widely used but not particularly good Razz

Does that mean you feel uncomfortable when doing your LP's?

I got 84, by the way.

No, I'm fine doing that and it would probably be better with a live audience... *gets an idea* I'm just uncomfortable with crowds and strangers who know more than me (or so I think). Also, I usually avoid lots of people because I pick up their energy and completely lose my cool. However, I do like people watching, as long as they leave me in peace.

@Ben: I've got acting experience as well, but when I have to be me in a room full of strangers, bye-bye nerves.

Re: The Social Anxiety Test

Can I just say the following about a few of the statements.

1. I have moral, ethical and courtesy issues with public phone calls. I don't feel fear or anxiety about it, but I do feel embarrassment.

3. Eating in Public is currently an issue with me because of my new dentures... normally, however, and I hope after I get used to them, this shall go away.

8. Anyone who is not a celebrity or sports person who isn't nervous about being observed at work is probably missing the point of being observed.

13. Urinating in a public bathroom seems to be very much a male issue. I am not sure many, if any, female bathrooms have a facility for urinating in an open group.

17. Taking any test should surely cause some sort of anxiety, no matter what it is.

19. I don't look people in the eye because I have bad eyesight and don't want to alarm people by appearing to stare. I am sure other people with partial sightedness wll have the same effect.

Re: The Social Anxiety Test

Post by Red-Indigo on Wed Aug 03, 2011 8:07 pm

Haha I got 26.

But, I have to say I don't really think that the questions were very relevant. I am a little socially awkward, so I expected my score to be higher, but the questions weren't really aimed in the right places.

I am quite fine to talk to others I don't know, sure I feel anxiety but not fear and I don't avoid it. It's more an issue with people I do know, I react to what I think they will think. If that makes sense? People I don't care about, I couldn't care less over what they thought of me, take it or leave it.

For example, the question about talking to people you don't know, I'm fine with it, except I can never think of things to say. I don't really say much in person to someone unless it needed. (Unless I know them, then its different Razz ) I guess people would see this as aloof/socially awkward, yet the test didn't pick up on it as it wasn't really situational enough.

Still fun though Very Happy

I'm basically the same.

When it comes to meeting new people, its not shyness, but often I just don't have much to say, unless its to someone I know well. Hard to know what to say to someone when you aren't sure what interests them or what they find funny.

I got 54. Interesting, I thought I would maybe be in the 90s. I seem to pick up a lot of anxiety when in public out of fear of many things. I don't get out much you see.

Only 24, which kinda surprised me because to be honest I don't talk to people outside of my close friend group when it can be avoided (IRL, that is). I guess that's because I'm not anxious about social interaction so much as I just don't do much of it Razz

I somehow managed to get 50, proving this test is inaccurate.

How I scored less than Andeavor despite my fear of humanity as a whole, I will never know.

(C'mon, socially I'm possibly the most inept person here.)

31.

These questions are silly. Using a public telephone? What's the point, I have a mobile phone. Some of the stuff like drinking, I can't do (under-age) and I'll never do, not because of fear but because in my opinion I see it as foolish to drink. And everyone gets anxious when being observed or when they're up on stage or the centre of attention. It's all a matter of SUPPRESSING that anxiety, not lacking it.

This is a rather inaccurate test, I'd say change the questions. Most of them you have fear or avoid them because of a different reason.

Agreed with those points, but do keep in mind this test isn't to be taken seriously.

Some people actually enjoy it Laughing
