Earthquake...? Empty Earthquake...?

Post by Andeavor Sun Feb 12, 2012 9:51 am

I just experienced a small rumbling as if a very, very large truck drove by. It's quite unusual for this area since we're in central Europe.

Unsure

If it was an earthquake, there are good chances that it'll be tomorrow on the papers.

I've never really been in such situation, so can only imagine what it feels like.

if the ground shook and items around the house shook then it probably was. I felt one during the summer and it was quite an experience.

I live on the hill side near a very small crevice. The last time I felt an earthquake in Switzerland was in the mountains about 20 years ago. I did hear about a small tremor somewhere in the south not too long ago.

Ah, how I envy you. The view there must be freaking amazing Sad I've always wanted to go to Switzeland, some of my friends went on a skiing trip. Though to tell the truth I just wanna see the Swiss cows Very Happy

Where I'm living atm, we're supposed to be sitting at a massive fault that's been gaining tension for the last century (Memphis, on the Mississippi). Last time it shook it made the whole river change direction. I just hope we're gone by the time it happens again...

According to the experts the epicenter was near the city of Zug, which is a little bit southwest from where I am. They measured it at 4.5 and many people reported it sounded like a car exploded in the garage or a giant truck drove by (as I felt it). There are quite a few minor damages such as small fissures in the walls and ceilings but nothing to be deeply concerned about.

I live in Central Lancashire - not far from Blackpool actually. There have been two earthquakes in this area in the last year or so (I experienced both). they were however man-made and linked to "Fracking" (no sniggering in the back Wink ) a process of extracting natural gas from deep-lying shale. I also remember an Earthquake a few years ago that had it's epicenter in Lincolnshire. I felt the Earth move then (5.7 on Richter Scale).

From a Geological standpoint, it is thought that Earthquakes that occur away from the edges of tectonic plates are extremely rare (relative to plate edges). However, it has to be said that the three of the five most powerful earthquakes in human history were all in areas that would not be considered earthquake prone. Of course, the most devastating tend to be by plate edges because they occur much more often and therefore are likely to occur in a built-up area more.

Since Australia lies pretty much in the middle of a tectonic plate, far from any fault lines, we very rarely experience any earthquakes here. Even the tiniest one would probably make national news. I think there was one in the Northern Territory a few years ago, and even though it was only a feint rumble it got national attention.

Living in America and more specifically San Francisco however was a completely different story. Earthquakes were frequent enough that they weren't even really any cause for alarm.

I remember when me and my brother had just moved back from australia to america, there was a rather large earthquake on new years eve. Me and my brother were terrified, but the rest of the family were just walking about as if nothing were happening.
