NEWS: SimCity is officially back!
More images after the link:It’s Official, SimCity is Back
Sure, it was leaked all over the internet last week, but tonight at the Game Developers Conference, EA has made it official: SimCity is back.
The game, simply being labelled for now as SimCity (not SimCity 5), is being developed by Maxis, is due for the PC, and will be out in 2013.
EA says that the development team consists of many veterans from SimCity 2000 and SimCity 4. It will also - wait for it - feature curved roads. Yes.
Another new feature for the game is the fact these cities are, for the first time (well, since some driving games we won't mention) in full 3D.
The new SimCity also has a feature called "Social Flow", which is the term for how your city will affect other people's cities. For example, resources are finite, and decisions you make - and technological advances other make - will impact the development of your own metropolis.
Further stuff like talking to individual Sims, a complete world builder and even the ability to customise buildings shows, surprisingly, Maxis is actually making a proper SimCity here. Not a social game, not a Facebook title, they look like they're making a real, honest-to-God SimCity game. Which sounds great.

Wowsers, that trailer looks like they took the best bits of SimCity: Societies and they are gonna make a proper SimCity game. I hope the zoning and construction is more dynamic, by that I mean it has a mixture of the classic SimCity (Zoning) and updated it with actual buildings instead of zoning and the ability to zone properly. For example, Universities was always a bug-bear of mine, since you could have only one, and it took up a square block - there are several large cities with multiple universities and I do not know a single one that is designed as a finite square - some have campuses in far flung locations and some (like UCLan in Preston) are all over the city.
I wanna be able to drive through my city as if it is GTA.
Pretty much my only hopes.

That looks like a great game. With the other simcities I was always getting bored pretty fast, but this one might be different.

Re: NEWS: SimCity is officially back!
It appears they went back to the drawing board and reworked how resources, [expandable] resource/service buildings and traffic work together creating a highly complex simulation of a real city.
The new GlassBox engine allows residences, offices and various industries to be zoned just like in classic SimCity style, but it takes direct traffic access for the building materials to be transported and the buildings to be constructed.
There may be some micromanaging to start up with but at least you can follow your city's growth in close detail. And if something doesn't work out you can quickly find the problem and not speculate while hurtling further down the debt hole.
