University

Post by Vektrix on Thu Apr 01, 2010 6:37 pm

Some of us on here have been or are going to university. I was wondeirng which unis and what you were/are studying.

Also feel free to discuss where you might be and what you might be studying too.

I'll start.

I have NO degrees, but have been to:

University of Derby to study Information Systems, failed the first year because I indulged in social activities too much.

University of Central Lancashire, preston to study Management and Business Information Systems. I got a Diploma in Higher Education - in short, I passed two years of study.

aww, I have not been to uni...

I have A levels and GNVQ's but that's it *sadface* but once I get some stuff sorted, I am thinking of going to bournemouth uni, to do an art degree. Although I quite fancy an illustration course.

I started a foundation in art, but I left due to the college being totally disorganised and costing a huuuge amount to get to everyday. Hence why I am not at uni yet.

I am tempted to do a couple of study at home style courses, probably on animal psychology or somthing as it interests me.

But Durham are determined to take as few people as possible, and the UCAS points you need for Durham are really high.
I'll be sure to check out Lancaster though! Very Happy

Yeah, well, Durham is like the 5th best Uni in the country - mind you, Lancaster is a well respected uni too.

Um, i've got a bit of a problem...
This week i've been at a summer school for people aiming for the top 20 universities in the UK, i hope to study History and Politics...
Originally i was thinking about Oxford... but i decided against it...
At the summer school i've been talking to a number of oxbridge graduates who think i would do well in Oxford, so i've ended up reconsidering Oxford again...
Anyone got any advice on this sort of problem? confused study

Well is there a particular reason you decided against oxford? What other uni were you considering?

A piece of advice I was given when I was choosing my university from a family friend (pHD) is that don't pick a university just for the name. A degree is a degree and employeers won't care all that much what uni you went to.

If you want to go to oxford because you like oxford then go ahead, but if your going to oxford because its a famous university, but you'd prefer to go to another, then go to the one you'd prefer to go to.

Thanks Reyes, i had a feeling either you or vek would reply.

The main reason i've considered it is because i actually like it as a place, the thing that's made me apprehensive was the rumours nd reputation.
I'm also aware that i'd really have to work my socks off to get the grades.

As for the other unis i've been considering, 2 of the them are in the top 10 and the other 2 are in the top 30, all have a reputation for being great with History and Politics...

The thing is that up until this week i thought i would be out of my depth at Oxford, but having met people applying for Oxford and realising that i'm in their league, and having talked to graduates from Oxford who said i have the potiential to do well there, i'm now reconsidering it as an option

What other unis are you considering, Ben?

I'd only go to Oxford if I wanted to, not if I felt I should. Ultimately, wherever you go, you find and make friends, it just depends on whether you want to say I am an Oxbridge graduate or not.

I never considered either for two reasons, one, I would never get in and two, I didn't really wanna go to either. I wanted to stay in the north, so all the Unis I applied for are in the north except one, and that was Derby.

Getting a degree in History and Politics from York, Lancaster, Durham, Cambridge, Oxford or any other top university is a very laudible thing, and I wish you luck. I wish I'd done that subject first time around actually.

I say choose a place your comfortable at. If you got to a uni you hate, chances are you'll dread going there, which in turn will affect how hard you work.

if you like Oxford, then definetly keep it open as an option and seeing as its a high ranking uni its not suprising that it would be hard, but in a way you'd find it more rewarding if you succeeded there. If you get good marks there it means your doing pretty damn well. Plus I see it as a good thing to be worked hard for your marks, it means at the end if you've done well, you'll be as prepared for your future careers as you possibly could.

Still, if your having reservations, shop around for other unis and try not to dismiss any uni till you've seen it and been ot it. I went to about 8 unis before I chose Hawkesbury (and i mean physically went to them).

I'm thinking about applying for Oxford, Warwick, York, Leeds and Sheffield all have a really good record for history and politics.
I finished the summer school today, and i think that i'll wait to see how i feel about my AS results.
My uncle got into Oxford to do languages with B,B,B because he interviewed well and had a strong looking application... so i'm hoping that straight A's, along with good interviews will get me offers.

The teachers at the summer school didn't think i'd be out of my depth, which means one of my concerns have been silenced.
