.::Major PC help required::.
Hi guys, I'm using my mac laptop at the minute because my PC has something wrong with it. Everything it does takes an amazing amount of time to do, and often leaves the computer not responding or occasionally freezing. For example, it takes two minutes to load the little box asking you whether you want to log off, restart or shutdown. THATS HOW BAD IT IS. I can pretty much do nothing on it now, so I really need some help.
What could it be?
How could I fix it?
Will I need a new PC?

I'm in the process of slowly removing any programs recently installed or that are old, and I've also disabled quite a few files that might cause problems.

Marky, sounds like you have too much stuff on your computer. Have you tried deleting some files you don't need?
Re: .::Major PC help required::.
I'm in the middle of doing that, but it seems strange. I have used roughly 20% of the hard drive

I have two antivirus software, and neither of them are telling me so.
I'm gonna remove spore now, I think. For good.

Re: .::Major PC help required::.
Perhaps it is your Antivirus software causing the problem. You have two when you only need the one.
Re: .::Major PC help required::.
Try rebooting.

Here's a check list for you to go through which might help (beggining stages).
1. Have you checked the size of the background applications running? Are you sure something isn't using a huge amount?
2. Do you have enough RAM in your PC to handle said applications and system processes?
3. Have you performed a Memtest yet to see if there is any bad adresses in your RAM?
4. Have you opened the PC up and checked that the cooling is running sufficiently?
5. When did this happen? What were you doing before hand?
6. What do you personally think the problem might be?

1. yes, it MIGHT be Avast! Antivirus
2. I only recently got another 1gb of RAM for my PC, so I have enough
3. don't know how
4. As far as I know, the cooling is fine. The fan is smooth, and I feel a draught when I put my hand near the vent
5. It happened a week ago, while I was asleep. It just......'went' when I started it up
6. I THINK it is something to do with Avast! and my OS, Windows XP. XP is seriously messed up on my PC, as diagnosed by Vektrix
@Trick: I have just restarted it for the tenth time today.

Re: .::Major PC help required::.
i have avast! antivirus and run on XP. my computer is fine.
try checking your CPU usage by pressing Ctrl+Alt+Delete. It is at the bottom of the box. If it is at or near 90-100% when you have something simple running, it is most likely overheating. Also, check how many processes you have going. My computer is fast, and I have around 60 processes going.

WTF!!! It's not even giving me the option to start in safe mode now. I press and hold f8, and it does jack-all. My mouse is no longer recognised, and it stops responding on startup

Re: .::Major PC help required::.
Marky, I seem to remember telling you yesterday that having two anti-virus programs is a bad idea. They compete with each other, they effectively treat each other as viruses.
If you cannot remove Avast, remove AVG. if you want AVG, then remove Avast as well and then re-install AVG.

Re: .::Major PC help required::.
At the moment i can't remove anything. I can only remove avast if I download an uninstall utility, which sucks because my PC can't load any internet browser. I can't reach the add/remove programs bit either

Re: .::Major PC help required::.
I'm afraid you'll have to be patient in getting the add/remove programs thing to come up. My PC went on a go slow a while ago, and would completely freeze after ten minutes. I solved it with patience by uninstalling small programs and gradually it took longer and longer to freeze, allowing the uninstallation of larger programs.
Luckily, ant-virus progs are relatively small.
I didn't need to re-install my OS after that, but did anyway.

Re: .::Major PC help required::.
How old is your computer? Do any errors come up?
Besides what everyone else said, especially only having one anti-virus you can also do these things:
- run a disk clean-up, defragmentation and scandisk on your computer
- remove autostart programs that you don't use
- look in your device manager. If there's anything else besides a + beside it such as an exclamation mark, arrows, or X's then something is wrong.
- clear out your cache and temporary files. Temp files are .tmp but look at this site before doing it: http://filext.com/faq/deleting_temporary_files.php
- make sure that your drivers are up to date
