NEWS: Do the crime, pay with pennies.
VERNAL, Utah — A Utah man has been cited on a charge of disorderly conduct after paying for a disputed medical bill with 2,500 pennies.
The Deseret News of Salt Lake City reports Jason West went to Basin Clinic in Vernal on May 27 prepared to dispute an outstanding $25 bill.
Assistant Vernal Police Chief Keith Campbell says that after asking staff members whether they accepted cash, West dumped 2,500 pennies on the counter and demanded that staff count them.
Campbell says the incident upset staff because pennies were strewn about the counter and floor, and West's action served "no legitimate purpose."
Police later issued the 38-year-old West a citation for disorderly conduct. That carries a fine of as much as $140. Or 14,000 pennies.

I understand trying to get rid of loose change as no one likes having loose change but deal Buddha thats a lot of pennies. How do you even collect that many pennies?
I'm just glad here the smallest amount of change you can have is a five cent coin.
Re: NEWS: Do the crime, pay with pennies.
I have a feeling that the guy did not have that many pennies lying around, but went to the bank and specifically got all those pennies just to be a jerk. Now, does he deserve that giant fine? I don't think so.

xD right on Zob - I cant tell is "I dont think so." a joke?
Cus if thats the case yep give him that fine, but still, it's quiet a big fine!:O

It is legitimate currency, and as standard all people who deal with money should ensure the cash is correct, so I don't think he was doing anything wrong. He may have demanded in a far too aggressive tone, or he may have simply said that he wasn't entirely sure it was the right change and the staff just didn't want to count it.
Easy solution, take it all to a bank, they have machines that count coins of all sizes.

I bet the hospital was giving him a hard time about it, and he was just fed up with it.
I don't think he deserves the fine, but he probably shouldn't have done it anyway.

I don't. However, he could have gone to the bank and exchanged it I suppose.
Re: NEWS: Do the crime, pay with pennies.
Well I think given the fact they were all pennies and that there was a previous dispute, he was being a jerk and making a point.
Pretty stupid, but then again that fine is pretty stupid too. They should have demanded they were in counted bags (you know, 100 pennies to each) as the bank would have done the same.
