Original v.s. Cover
As you may well be aware, many acts have done covers of all sorts of songs. In this thread we can discuss the merits of which version is better. I am ashamed to say that I discover most originals via a cover version. I am also aware that my two fave bands (Metallica and Deep Purple) either started as cover bands or released entire albums of cover versions.
In many cases I MUCH prefer the cover to the original - especially when the original was of a different genre, Smooth Criminal by Michael Jackson is a case in point, I much prefer Alien Ant Farm's version. However, I acknowledge that if you like the cover, the original must therefore have some merit.
The reason I started thread is this little battle.
Original:
Cover:
I think I prefer Van Canto's version, it sounds more harmonious as opposed to a set of sounds put together, though Grave Digger's version is very good.
The following is an example where I was not even aware it was cover 9though it is clearly a U2 style riff yet, after hearing the original I thought the cover was far superior (and I DO like U2).

Just wonder what Original v.s. Covers you guys like, or can see dramatic improvement or are just pointless.

Re: Original v.s. Cover
I always thought this was a pretty good cover.
The Spiderbait version has so much more...awesome.
I like the FFDP version better too. That guy has a good voice.

Re: Original v.s. Cover
Just rectified my error in the OP about the MJ song.
I did not know Land of Confusion was a cover until someone posted the Genesis song in another thread here
Trick: On the Floor would be good if they got rid of Pitbull, and the cover you showed is good, but I am not convinced by the violin as a sound for it.
I also like it when Rock Bands do Rock and Metal versions of Classical Music (Deep Purple are especially good at it). However, this is the most recent one I found.

That was me again
I discovered it was a cover by accident a few years ago. I had seen the Disturbed "land of confusion" music video on tv and wanted to see it again so I went on youtube and looked up just land of confusion and the genesis version came up. I quite like both versions.
One of my favourite covers is Marilyn Manson's cover of Nightmare before Christmas's "This is Halloween" song.
