Fallout Discussion Topic Empty Fallout Discussion Topic

Post by Arkanay Wed Mar 09, 2011 4:54 am

I've seen many people discussing Fallout in the Gaming topic, so I thought it could be a nice idea to create Fallout's own topic.

This works like Oblivion's thread - Feel free to discuss anything related to Fallout universe here.

---

I have decided to create a new character in Fallout New Vegas and am aiming to "complete"/check out all aspects of the game with it.
So far, I'm still in Goodsprings. Clearing some Geckos and some bugs and am still in the first quests.

So far, so good. I'm planning to join the Legion in the future, though, but it is unfortunate you can only actually join the Legion after you get to New Vegas. :/

Another thing, I've been thinking about, and I'm sure some of you, if not all, also did, Fallout in multiplayer mode. VATS would have to be removed, but then the game would kind of lack some of its essence. For this reason, I believe Fallout only works out well in Single Player Mode. If you have something to say about this, please go ahead.

An add I would very much like to see in the game is vehicles. I feel it lacks them so much. I understand the world has pretty much been destroyed, but a lot of people (npcs) demonstrate tech, time and skill to create many things, among them vehicles. There was no need to make a huge selection of vehicles, but perhaps two or three different types - Some sort of sand buggy, weird car made out of parts and perhaps even a bike. Razz
This would open a new gameplay, many more quests and biker gangs. ^^

You know, I may get F:NV after all. I was watching a Let's Play by GaLm and boy is he a procrastinator, if he's not hunting coyote's for no reason, he'll shoot anyone that's not relevant to the story anymore, good or bad.

I'd rather play it myself correctly, then.

That's one of the great things about the game - You can be and do pretty much everything. (Of course you can't be a circus clown. Something that makes more sense according to the story. Razz)

I'm currently hunting some coyotes and salvaging junk nearby the first town, while doing the first quests.

First Wasteland Tip - The more you pick, the more you sell. Razz
Be careful with your inventory space, though.

I believe you will like the game if you get it, Andeavor. If you want to ask anything about it, shoot.

Well, I just started new vegas. And I've got to say, it has me torn between fallout 3 and oblivion as the "Best RPG game ever" I really don't like the fact that the mojave wasteland isn't really a "Wasteland" at all. Which, for a game that takes place in a post apocalyptic world. Odd, but we can thank Mr house for that.

I LOVE the weapon mods, and I enjoy the plot. But I also wish that the karma system was more prevalent as it was in fallout 3, than the standing with the various factions in the game, and how easily you can screw up relations with CL. Then have an squad of death troopers go after you, either instantly dropping you or further destroying relations with them. And how difficult it is to rebuild relations with any faction. It's a good system, but it's used a bit obsessively in my opinion.

Also. Radscorpions travel in packs now. Which is by far the scariest thing I have ever seen in my video gaming life, a pack of giant radscorpions hissing and charging at you.

And, vault 22 is the one of the creepiest settings in a fallout game, ever.

Giant Radscorpions can be a pure PITA for low level characters. ><

The Karma system is indeed a little different. For example, looting Legion/Powder Gangers' crates will cause you to lose Karma. I suppose this was made this way, so in case you joined with them would get bad Karma by doing so.

The Reputation system is mostly for looks. Whenever I wanted to see something regarding it, I'd check it out. Besides that, it didn't really affect the game. Ofc it would decide what factions would attack you and whatnot, but perhaps you could get more out of a community if you had high rep with them. Maybe they'd bring you offerings, etc. Just a thought.

And yeah, the game isn't really a Wasteland, but there is a good reason for it.

I must admit, the first time I checked the size of the map I was disappointed with it. But it actually is quite decent. Probably only checked half of it, maybe a little more.

Vault 22... Man, that place was awesome. xD I remember putting Boone and the robot outside while I ventured in alone. Quite creepy place indeed. ^^

Not at all, Andeavor. Of course it helps having an overall idea for the Fallout Universe, but you do not need to know Fallout 3 to understand New Vegas.

The gameplay is similar, though, so if you are familiar with it, it will not be a problem.

The hardcore mode is one of the best features. If you're in the right mood, it adds a great feel to the game.

Time to hold a little poll, just for fun.

Post by Hutch Wed Mar 09, 2011 11:38 am

Tough call, actually. The NCR are a bunch of imperialists, in my mind. But they are fighting for a good enough cause, it's just that I don't think I agree with the idea of complete martial law, even in a setting like the one in the fallout games.

BoS is an awesome group, any combat scenario with them is a good scenario, no matter what "Wing" of the brotherhood of steel you might be speaking of, but since the Mojave wing of the group are still the technology-mongering form that I hate, I don't really like them either. I still prefer them over the NCR, but the BoS is a much more interesting group. Even if some of them are insane weapon-hoarders that don't care about anyone else.

I hate the enclave, they represent an intensely-patriotic group of Americans that I've always hated, but even though they were a group of deranged patriots, they were a loveable group of deranged patriots, they caught me by surprise in fallout 3. And were always an interesting enemy to fight against. And probably one of the best "Evil factions" I've ever seen in a video game

And if you ask me, Caesars legion is just annoying. I don't really like them at all, I guess Caesar is a great character, but I still don't like the legion as a whole. They were kind of boring, as of right now. They have never done anything to catch me by surprise. And although they are evil, they never fulfilled that sense of loathing the way that the enclave did.

So as of right now, I think I'm going to vote for the BoS. Mainly because their armor looks awesome and because they are a very interesting faction, more so than the other 3. In my opinion.

I would also vote "Other" for the super mutants, even though they were stupid, brutal, and annoying in fallout 3. They still make a VERY interesting group in fallout new vegas, and although I've always liked them. I began to REALLY like them in new vegas. The brotherhood is still better, but the super mutants are still a great group.

Oh my god. I just spent 15-20 minutes writing a huge post about my opinion on factions and got Server Error... All lost. ><

Well, to try and sum it up.

My vote goes to the NCR. I think they're the most normal group that try to do the right thing, only lack and, unfortunately, are lame in certain aspects. They could learn a thing or two regarding discipline and skill from the Enclave.

I think the Legion is a nice concept, only they're too narrow minded for my taste. They could keep an open mind and be more effective - Like when I killed Caesar and his body guards on my past character, everyone rushed at me with fist weapons while I gunned them down - Total mood killer. They should keep loyal to melee, but if the situation calls, go for guns as well.

"And if you ask me, Caesars legion is just annoying. I don't really like them at all, I guess Caesar is a great character, but I still don't like the legion as a whole. They were kind of boring, as of right now. They have never done anything to catch me by surprise. And although they are evil, they never fulfilled that sense of loathing the way that the enclave did." - By thestarwarsgeek.

Spoiler:

It could be nice if there were a fallout game where you started of as an Enclave trooper and then, throughout your actions, your fate would change. You could continue an Enclave trooper, fighting BoS, or even desert them and travel the Wasteland. That could be interesting, with the whole story revolving around them. I like their tech, skills, tactics - but the fact they're "evil" makes me not like them as much.

I like the BoS in Fallout 3, but I dislike the Outcasts and the BoS whole concept, as it can be partially encountered in New Vegas. I understand the greater purpose, but they often end up being idiots to innocent people.

I will agree. The scene at nipton was pretty gruesome, and the entire "If you sneeze on me, I'll crucify you" thing is kind of intimidating. When I walked into the area, I was shocked. I'll go ahead and admit that. But I still think that the "Evil" they do is in torturing people and induce suffering, a pretty unpleasant way to operate, but on the other side. The Enclave made everyone's life in the capital wasteland suck. They didn't need to crucify anyone, they just needed to land down in helicopters and

Spoiler:

So yes, the legion is a pretty nasty group, but the enclave does a lot more, and worse deeds. Plus, they have plasma rifles and armor suits. Which instantly makes them 25% better.

=================================================
Just blundered into radscorpion gulch by accident. I have never seen so many mutated bark scorpions in my life. I mean, they were easy kills. But even with my perception of around 8 or 9, they kept on sneaking up on me. I mean, atleast you can SEE the bigger radscorpions coming. These little things just startled you. Even though they might have done an upward of 1 damage to you.

Nasty little bugs...

They sure are. But I found out that a good submachine gun is capable of doing decent damage versus them. Razz

Plus ED-E and walking backwards, lol.

I'm by Mojave Outpost now. Got Primm a new Sheriff (the prisoner guy), cleared a lot of Powder Gangers and creatures, now starting to approach Nipton. Things are being interesting.

I know I said this many times already, but I really feel the game and story kind of forces you to join NCR and oppose the Legion. There should be a way, a moment, where joining them with be more natural. Maybe as part of the Main quest you would be captured and turned into a slave. SOmething a bit more motivating than how it is right now.

The Enclave are indeed evil. I see them like the regular, narrow-minded trooper that clears everything that looks funny. Razz

As I mentioned before, I have sided with the Legion.

And just wiped out all NCR in Forlorn Hope - after taking the Legion´s quest in Nelson.

I wish there were more Legion´s quests, though. Sad The game seems so much shaped to make you side with the NCR or be "alone".

Oh, and those three ranger idiots that approached me after I got bad rep with the NCR were quite lame. "You have three days to improve your rep or we´ll be back." I told them we finish this now and they answered me to go and have fun in my three days... Needless to say, they´ve been promoted to vulture´s lunch.

Post by ProbablynotHax Sat Mar 12, 2011 5:47 am

I had a similar error to arkanay, my internet access cut off as soon as I posted my extremely long reply to everyone, so I'll try to give the gist of what I was talking about. I'll be happy to answer any specific questions, should the need present itself. Moving on...

I think in order to fully grasp all of the factions in NV, and FO3, it is necessary to play fallout 1 and 2. The super-mutants in NV and FO3 are not the same, not by a long shot, and to understand this you would need to actually play the games. Such characters like Marcus, and the constant references to "the Master" corrob The outcasts from Fallout 3 represent the same ideals that the Mojave/Midwestern chapters did, so I would not differentiate between the two if you can help it. To truly grasp why factions do what they do, or are the way that they are, you should not base that entirely on 3/NV. Factions like the Enclave, the Brotherhood, or even the NCR can only be fully comprehended if you have the full backstory. Making a conclusion on the Enclave, or any faction, seems silly without knowing the full story. Enough rambling, though.

The Enclave is my favorite faction. The are the best armed, trained, and organized faction in post-war America. They are the most respectable faction in New Vegas. Instead of sticking with antiquated pre-war tech, they continue to progress technologically. They are the developers of tech. such as plasma casters and plasma weaponry in general, MKII Power armor, and tesla armor. They have so much more than what what shown is 3 and ESPECIALLY New Vegas. The Enclave in New Vegas was one of the most disappointing parts of the game. Their fate in Fallout 2 was even a disappointment to me. Though, considering what Lyon's said in Fallout 3, I expect they're up to something. Smile Hopefully, in the future, they'll be back to being the enigmatic superpower they should be. I look forward to seeing their importance in Fallout 4.

The brotherhood is full of naive, well trained morons. They are out-matched by the Enclave, and they know it. I liked them more in 1, 2, and 3 when they actually stood for something. Now, they just hide out in their bunker (provided the Courier doesn't do something about it). I appreciate the fact that they understand the importance of technology, but the whole thing stagnates when they lose the drive to produce new technology. Not to mention their efforts of keeping advanced technology has clearly failed, as seen in places like the Silver Rush. I like the BoS, but they need to be less timid. Veronica has the right idea, for those who know of her in depth.

The NCR is an imperialistic government who hides behind the mask of "doing what's right" while they tax the hell out of everyone. Their taxes are mentioned multiple times, but they are too caught up in trying to put stake in everything to do something about it. They can't even protect themselves, let alone their trading caravans. The only real fighters are the rangers, yet, even desert rangers are fairly easy to dispatch. Veteran Rangers are the Best they have to offer, and for good reason. They are some of the most difficult opponents in the game, especially on higher levels. I respect their fighting capabilities, that's about it. They don't do what's right, they do what's economical.

Caesar's legion was by no means boring, and they were extreme in every meaning of the word. They crucify people, and are strictly helded by their discipline. They are physically fit, and are proficient at close-quarters combat. Which, it's worth adding, is one of the best combat skills in the game. I love the ballistic fist and pushy. Anyway, I like Caesar's legion in some ways. However, they love Caesar too much for their own good. Blindly following someone who isn't going to be alive for longer than 20 years is never a sound practice. They won't last on their own without Caesar, it might take centuries but it will happen. They are opposed to technology, although this is for a visibly good reason, I do not agree with it.

The supermutants, as I have said, were not shown in the light they should have been. Disappointing considering the other games in the series. As I have said, you need so much more backstory on the supermutants to truly and fully understand them. Still, they were a nice addition to New Vegas; I hope to see them in future installments

If you have any questions about the factions, I'll be happy to answer them, if I'm able to. I like to think I actually know what I'm talking about.

You bring a good point regarding how much we truly know about the factions. I only based my judgment in what I know of Fallout 3 and New Vegas.

I actually tried playing Fallout 1 once, but the gameplay just didn´t appeal to me.

A problem that I think is present in Fallout 3 and New Vegas is that, although you are free to do what you wish, the game story is pretty much shaped for you to follow a certain path. (Like at the end of Fallout 3. It makes no sense poisoning the water. It´s like the be evil just to be evil option.)
They were able to change that with some addons, being the Pitt one of them - both sides have their good pros and cons. But I feel New Vegas has "be a friend of the NCR" written all over it. Most of the map settlements are owned by them, as well as a lot of side quests.

I´m still sided with the Legion on this playthrough and killing as much NCR as I find. (Although I am in good terms with that ranger with a bum leg in Novac. Razz) And am a good friend of the independent settlements (Goodsprings, Primm and Novac)

Nonetheless, I feel the NCR is what approaches the most what is considered "normal" by many - Be protected (although too many times they are not) and pay a truck load of cash.

I´m sure being a member/citizen of the Enclave is a wonderful thing. Only not good if you meet them on the other side of the barrel. Razz

No, Ark. No! Their so cute and.... made of muscle with greenish skin?

Forget it, do whatever you want. The only good reward you will get is rex finally being repaired. Assuming you find a brain for him.

==================================================

Well, I'm beginning to replay fallout 3 as a "Sneaking character", after completing operation anchorage (with a small guns skill of around 45, and an energy weapons skill of 20, I'm so proud of myself) and putting the Chinese stealth armor to use, things can be easier, and for some reason I find it hysterical to shove life grenades into super mutants as they walk back to a larger group. But the fact that you're slower than an inchworm is EXTREMELY annoying.

Plus, I still find the prospect of busting into a building full of super mutants with a plasma rifle and a maxed out energy weapons skill with a maximum damage resistance and turning each and every one of them into a pile of goop VERY attractive.

I can be rather impatient in video games, if you didn't figure that out by context.

The Chinese Stealth Armor is a very good item. Definitely one of the best of Fallout 3, I would say.

The type of character I am in New Vegas, well, I´m putting points in Science/Medicine/Guns/Sneak/Lockpick and a few here and there in Energy Weapons and Melee Weapons. I decided to distribute the SPECIAL points in order to make a balanced, yet efficient character.
My SPECIAL in NV.
S - 6
P - 6
E - 5
C - 5
I - 6
A - 7
L - 5

It works out rather well, to be honest. And I am considering to get a Luck implant.
Also, after fixing Rhonda and sending her off with Tabitha, I got Raul as a companion. Cool Danny Trejo for the win!

Raul is definitely my favourite companion. Besides being voiced by Danny Trejo, which is awesome Razz, he´s quite good with a Revolver (I also gave him Vance´s submachine gun) and is entertaining to speak with. So my companions are ED-E and Raul.

In other playthrough, I have had Veronica, Cassidy, Boone, Rex (which are all decent) and ED-E, so this is my first time with Raul.

I must say, though, that in Fallout 3, having Dogmeat as a companion was definitely one of the best feels of the game, as well as a good trade mark. I don´t think they achieved the feeling Fallout 3 had with Fallout New Vegas, although I think it is a better game.

Finally a Fallout discussion thread, I've been waiting for one of these Very Happy

For the poll I voted for the Enclave, and no not the FO:3 Enclave but the Enclave from FO:2. They were a lot more organized, and even more evil and diobolical (?) and their armor was sweet.

And personally I prefer FO:NV over FO:3, I liked the ability to choose what side you fought for and thought the storyline was better then 3's. The atmosphere wasnt quite as good as 3's but was still nice.

I am currently doing a hardcore playthrough on NV.
