That Song got me into them.....
I was thinking recently how I got into many of the bands I am a fan of, and you know what conclusion I came to? I heard an AWESOME song by them, so decided to investigate them further... some examples.
I could go on, the same is true of Korn (Freak on a Leash), Fear Factory (Cars), Lacuna Coil (Enjoy the Silence) and Within Temptation (What have you Done).
After hearing these songs it persuaded me to investigate further, and now I have these bands firmly within my highest sphere of appreciation. And yes, Trick, Path to Decay by Sirenia is a song that also fits into this category.
Just wondering if any of you guys are the same.
Equally, I have to say I have had some failures in this area - after hearing an awesome song by other bands, I have found my investigation of them to be thoroughly disappointing. Examples of these are Linkin Park (One Step Closer), Dream Theater (Pull me Under), Smashing Pumpkins (Bullet with Butterfly Wings) and Rammstein (Zwitter).

Re: That Song got me into them.....
Almost all the songs that you posted are the ones that got me into liking those bands too!
With the failures part, most of the time half the song is great and then it turns into trash once the people start singing. For me this is specifically with viking and folk metal.

I was actually saying that with the exception of those songs the rest of their stuff is a let down for me.
Some more examples of songs that got me into a band.
"Crush 'Em" by Megadeth
"Raining Blood" by Slayer
"Madhouse" by Anthrax
"Over the Hills and Far Away" by Nightwish
I get what you mean with that half a song thing, Slipknot are like that for me. Wait and Bleed and is a classic, it sounds like a pure thrash song, then the shouting starts - annoying thing is, the chorus proves they can hold a tune vocally. Early Fear Factory is like that too - but they do the scream all through their career so far, and it seems to bother me less (except with their first album).

Personally I like Dream Theater, but it's all up to opinion.
I love all these bands thanks to these songs. Like you, I have had failures with songs, and indeed Bullet with Butterfly Wings is one of them.
Spoonman - Soundgarden
Check My Brain - Alice In Chains
Plush - Stone Temple Pilots
Almost Honest - Megadeth
Stessfest - Steve Morse

My music tastes are a bit all over the place anyways, often I find I really like one song from a band/artist and hate the rest, so those 'failures' are often frequent for me... However some firm favourites with me:
Come Clarity - In flames
Drive - Incubus
Fuel - Metallica
Beach bug - Dinosaur pile-up
Parabola - Tool
Renegades - Rage against the Machine
Go with the flow - Queens of the stone age
Reason is Treason - Kasabian
Those are just the bands that I like through finding that one song and having to listen to it over and over Other 'favourite' bands/artists I can't really recall what introduced me to them. I totally agree with what you are saying about half a song too... Slipknot being the classic example. I'd even say SOAD falls in that area.

Re: That Song got me into them.....
The Joy formidable was a song I heard on the radio, and I fell in love with Whirring. The rest of the album is decent, although I haven't listened to much of it besides Whirring.
Cage the Elephant. Both of their albums from 2009 and 2011 are in my top 7 albums that I can just listen to fully without skipping a song. Ain't no Rest pulled me in back in 09 and I saw them live in 10 and they were nuts. Crowd surfing, going ballistic on stage and playing great music. I saw them again late in 10 at a closed in area with Stone Temple Pilots [amazing] And they were total crap. The craziness they displayed at the small concert was nothing compared to this large area. Plus it was near the release of their new album so they were playing some from the first and a few from the second. Although they didn't play the singles from the second.
The Bravery I actually found through a rap song that uses the opening bass line throughout his song. Then I youtubed this song and was amazed. I got the entire album and it went straight into second on my top 7 albums. Every song on the album is brilliant. Rats in the wall. Angelina, Fistful of Sand, The Ocean. Its just an amazing album. I wish the 09 album could compare to this one.
Other bands:
Death Cab For Cutie - Crooked Teeth, Grapevine Fires, You are A Tourist, Possess your Heart, Cath...
DCfC is a hit or miss, they can be depressing at times, but 3 of those songs are very up beat and catchy imo.
311 - Sunset in July
Never was a fan of 311 when they release Amber and all of those. But Sunset in July... is just epic. the sound, the lyrics, the song title. A sunset in July is truly beautiful, and this song is just excellent.
The Raconteurs - Steady as She Goes, Salute your Solution
I first heard Steady as she goes from a friend and I was like this is a good song, as was Level from their first album. Other than that the rest of the song wasn't worth listening to.
the end of last year I found their second album the Consolers of the Lonely. I listened to Salute your Solution and Consolers of the Lonely and said it was great songs. When I got the album. I could not stop listening to every song. It is currently my number 1 album of all time to listen to. Every song on it is jsut brilliant and gave me a love for Jack White.
I have a lot more bands I could go through [62 more actually b:] But that's a bit time consuming
