That's a silly comment to make.
You can find donation links on a HUGE amount of websites/forums that seemingly deal with unimportant subjects. They don't put it for the "sake of the fight" - they expect people to, you know, try to support they things they love doing in their free time. The "serious business" isn't just school and work and girlfriends and the like. These are cliches people try to throw around to feel better with themselves. If you like doing something, then why not do something to upkeep it?

When Vek says that he pays for the domain he doesn't mean 300 dollars a month. It's a fairly small amount, really. 3 bucks here, 3 bucks there, and that's about it. It's very easy with, say, paypal.

I for one would.

Every respectable forum has one or more sponsors, some are financially supported by companies, while other fan-based forums would be sponsored by a person or organization within the field.

Calling it a joke would be the joke.

I pay £9.99 a year for the domain. I paid 99p for it last year I own three other domains which I barely use. As already pointed out, many forums and websites allow donations. Forumotion has a built-in option to aid you in this.

If I was paying silly amounts, I'd be asking for subscriptions to EuroSpore.

I'm not stuffed with money, but depending on what you're asking for I would totally be willing to donate.

No need to worry yourselves financially. I have no plans to ask for donations or anything.

This is a question I ask myself as well.


Vek: To put your own money into a website which benefits dozens of people and not ask for a single donation, let alone even a "thank you", is quite noble. I for one would like to thank you for your continued dedication to this community, despite the lack of respect some members might show you.

Thank you Vektrix, you are a very nice person. If you ever need money, I'm sure we would be glad to all pitch in a few bucks.

Due to a combination of financial concerns and low forum activity, I am considering not renewing the domain name this year. It is due for renewal at the end of April, however, if the cost goes down to 99p again, I will renew it. Currently it will cost £9.99.

Bare in mind, if I do not renew, the cost (for me) will be around £30 for a year if I choose to purchase it again within three months of me allowing it to expire.

Luckily, all my other domains do not need renewing til next year (one of them I now own until 2015)
