NEWS: Political views are hardwired
Everyone knows that liberals and conservatives butt heads when it comes to world views, but scientists have now shown that their brains are actually built differently.
Liberals have more grey matter in a part of the brain associated with understanding complexity, while the conservative brain is bigger in the section related to processing fear, according to a study in Current Biology.
"We found that greater liberalism was associated with increased grey matter volume in the anterior cingulate cortex, whereas greater conservatism was associated with increased volume of the right amygdala," the study's authors write.
Other research has shown greater brain activity in those areas, according to which political views a person holds, but this is the first study to show a physical difference in size in the same regions.
"Previously, some psychological traits were known to be predictive of an individual's political orientation," says Ryota Kanai of the University College London, where the research took place.
"Our study now links such personality traits with specific brain structure."
The study was based on 90 "healthy young adults" who reported their political views on a scale of one to five from very liberal to very conservative, then agreed to have their brains scanned.
Disgust, aggression and conflict
People with a large amygdala are "more sensitive to disgust" and tend to "respond to threatening situations with more aggression than do liberals and are more sensitive to threatening facial expressions," the researchers write.
Liberals are linked to larger anterior cingulate cortexes, a region that "monitor(s) uncertainty and conflicts."
"Thus, it is conceivable that individuals with a larger ACC have a higher capacity to tolerate uncertainty and conflicts, allowing them to accept more liberal views."
It remains unclear whether the structural differences cause the divergence in political views, or are the effect of them.
But the central issue in determining political views appears to revolve around fear and how it affects a person.
"Our findings are consistent with the proposal that political orientation is associated with psychological processes for managing fear and uncertainty," say the researchers.

If you don't feel like reading the whole thing, simply, what they are saying is research has show that your political views may be in a way hardwired due to the way your brain is composed and not so much a matter of choice.
I just found it fascinating that something that you'd perceive to be a choice, may actually be a mental predisposition in terms of political views. Of course I doubt this applies to everyone.
So do you think your political views are set in stone, or do you think you have more freedom to choose your political beliefs than this study suggests?
Re: NEWS: Political views are hardwired
All this proves is a correlation - it by no means proves that the size of the ACC or amygdala even have any actual influence on political views. Whilst it is likely that they do to some degree, I think it would be naive to suggest that that is the only factor. I think political views are far more a product of nurture rather than nature.

I do believe that political views are tied to you being able to think "outside the box", which is tied to your brain capacities. Close-minded people will take on a more conservative view while open-minded people will allow for more liberties in their views.
There is of course room for personal open- or closed-mindedness in certain situations and views even, which depend on your education and upbringing.
It's a combination of capacity and nurture, I'd say.

I think while humans have already a certain natural disposition leaning more towards something, the environment and actions revolving around them and affecting their lives also ends up influencing their beliefs.
Basically, I believe it's part of how one already is combined with all the experiences that person goes through, that shapes their values.
