Miners in Chile Empty Miners in Chile

You probably heard about the 33 men stuck in a mine in Chile.

They´ve been there for over a month and a half. There is a small hole where the outside can pass supplies and items to the trapped miners, but it´s not big enough for them to come out.

Several plans to free them haven´t been successful, or even put through, specially due to being too risky because the caves can collapse and kill the miners.


If I´m not mistaken, they´re drilling a new entrance that will take a few months to be complete.


This means the miners will be trapped in the caves for a long time. At least support teams can send them goods through the small tunnel.
Before they were discovered, they were simply eating a mouthful of fish and water a day.


What do you guys think about this? What are your opinions or comments?

Must be a pretty intense situation, where you can contact and send materials, but not really get to them.

Hopefully everything will turn out well.

The fact that they have been there so long simply highlights the economic and technological disparities between Chile and the developed nations. If that had happened in the US, for example, you would expect them to have already been rescued by now.

I know this is not particularly on topic, but might be a sign of the difference.

Haiti had an Earthquake - the international community drops everything.
Chile had an Earthquake that was stronger a few weeks later and hardly anyone bats an eyelid.
Chile has 33 miners trapped in a mine and the world is on the edge of it's seat.

Not sure what this means, I just observed it.

It's all biased. In reality there is little difference between Free Media and State Media; they are both just as biased in reality.

In all seriousness, I heard they had special plans to occupy their days and were always followed by specialists.
Like with exercising sets, talking with doctors, limited contact with the family so they wouldn't go crazy, etc.

I still don't understand the need to turn a relatively minor event into a massive story, as the BBC has.

Except it is costing the BBC millions of pounds to have the team there - they have more personnel in Chile for this story than all the other major news channels combined.

The media runs after every story that attracts advertisers to fund their channels, papers and what-have-you's. When the earthquake happened in Chile, the press didn't cover it as much because that same story was told in Haiti already, and there was more political drama attached to it.

And YAY for the miners. Did they all survive?
