Cartoons with "adult" themes

Many of you, no doubt, watch cartoons, despite being no longer children, or even if you are children. Now, I love Tom and Jerry, but this is not the type of cartoon I am talking about.

So, which major cartoon that is not necessarily aimed at children is your fave?

I watched Simpsons briefly years ago. I liked it, but it's not easy to come across episodes here (without downloading them anyway, which I can't bother to do). South Park, however, is not, and I didn't like it at all.

You forgot Drawn Together and Aqua Teen Hunger Force. Of course you could just list adult swim's entire programming.

I stopped watching The Simpsons over a decade ago. It started to become its own caricature simply repeating the insanity from the news within the bounds of Springfield. The movie was hilarious though. I am more of a Futurama fan.

I realized how most children's cartoons have more adult themes and jokes than you would give them credit for. For example, SPongebob Squarepants is full of references that no child will understand and The Fairly Odd Parents use movie and TV references from way before my own time.

The other shows you listed are nowhere near my sense of humor. I can understand the jokes but it's the delivery that just seems out of place.

I like Simpsons, Family Guy, American Dad and The Cleveland Show. They´re entertaining, a bit stupid at times and some other times manage to pass funny, yet interesting, messages.

I'm not a fan of South Park, but I do like its World of Warcraft episode.

A very annoying issue here is that many of the episodes of the shows mentioned above are usually re-runs. They pass them on TV way too many times, run out of episodes and then keep sending the same ones again. :/

I've started watching them much less this last week, now that I think of it.

Still, answering the pool, my vote goes to Family Guy.

I like Futurama but its hardly on these days. Simpsons is funny, but as andy mentioned, getting a bit past it. I watch family guy somtimes, it either maks me say, gross... and turn over or laugh my head off. Depends on what its about. Same with south park. There are a few that were funny, but somtiems I think its a bit obscene/over the top.

There was this really wierd show on about monsters (werewolves, fish men, floating brains, zombies) and how they co-existed with humans, a cartoon on channel 4 or 5. Can't remember exactly, only watched it a couple of times, but that was funny in an obscure way.

The Simpsons: The trailblazer in my opinion. It has dealt with stuff that no other cartoon did until 1989. I am sure there were attempts before that, but The Simpsons managed to make it work. I love it as a spectacle, and it never ceases to amaze me the things that they get up to. I agree, it has become a tad of a caricature of itself. The Movie is awesome though and I do consider myself a fan, I do, however, tend to have it on in the background as I like having noise in my life.

South Park: This took The Simpsons humour and said "Screw You". The first cartoon I heard swearing (I notice Simpsons started using "Ass" and "Crap" after South Park became popular). In general I don't like South Park, though I do find it funny. The animation style puts me off quite a bit and to me, the cast of characters doesn't seem as rounded as other offerings. I mkust admit though, the Movie is awesome and like all these things (except one - see American Dad) there are just whole scenes and episodes that just force you to sit there, agog, at the awesomeness.

Family Guy: Seems to me to have the most rounded cast of characters, and I love Family Guy because no Minority, majority or niche is safe. It pokes fun pretty much equally at everyone. Now, although ever character is exaggerated, they do have easily the best two characters in any cartoon of this nature in Stewie and Brian. Peter however is vastly flawed in that he is essentially Homer Simpson without the bald head and yellow skin. Lois also seems to be just a more risqué Marge. Easily one of the funniest things ever made.

Futurama: Gets my vote, it is amazing and I wish it wasn't cancelled, however, the Made for DVD/TV movies are really good. I get the feeling the Network looked at this in the same way many Spore Players did DarkSpore... a sci-fi rip-off of something else. Far from it, it has an endless cast of lunatics, oddballs, mutants, aliens and robots. This is sci-fi nerd nirvana for me, and if you have Sky you can still catch both the episodes and movies on Sky1. Incidentally, Niblonians excreting Dark Matter is a far more exciting and complex issue than anything any other cartoon has tried.

American Dad: Have never watched a full episode as every time I try, I get bored. Another Homer Simpson rip-off, in so much as how he keeps his job despite his incompetence is beyond me. Nice touch with both the alien and the goldfish (a Brain rip-off?). I just haven't gotten into this at all.

Cleveland Show: Never seen it, don't wish to see it, he was easily the least rounded and least funny character in Family Guy. Didn't add to the poll as it has had only 1 or 2 seasons.

What is Aqua Teen Hunger Force? I have never watched Drawn Together, seen it in the "Now on" bar at the bottom of the telly and always skipped it. I always thought it was some action mumbo jumbo.

Incidentally, I would consider Renn and Stimpy in this category, when it was first broadcast in the UK it was on Channel 4 late at night because of it's slapstick violence - more recently I saw it on Prime-Time Saturday Morning TV. However, not added to the poll as a) I forgot about it and b) it has virtually no basis in reality.

@Andy. I loved Aqua Tee Hunger Force and Drawn Together when they were on as well as Space Ghost: Coast to Coast. But they don't show them anymore here, which makes me sad

Well I used to love Ren and Stimpy when I was younger.

The simpsons I used to love more than any show, but as they dragged on the series too long, it became progressively less funny.

I used to love Spongebob Square Pants, like andy said which used to have a lot of references children wouldn't understand, but again, the messed with the show and the new episodes aren't remotely funny.

Futurama in my opinion was better than the Simpsons and its a shame they cancelled it.

South Park is still good. I liked the fact that they were always completely unafraid to make fun of anyone, or anything.

But like Ark my vote has to go to Family Guy. People always seemed to down Family Guy because it has little narrative and is filled with non-sequesters and references... but to that I say.... who cares? I don't care that it has bad narrative structure, its still one of the funniest shows I've ever seen.

American Dad is also very funny, but I never got into it quite as much as Family Guy.

It was cancelled for 7 years and was then brought back for a 6th season (technically 5th but meh). :S

New season sometime in the middle of June. I like how when they came back, they made lolifying remarks about the FOX numbnuts that cancelled them. Though from what I see, many of you are unaware it's been revived. I guess it came back in 2005 as a series of 4 movies from 2005-2009, but it was properly brought back as a series in 2010 - Very recently.

And I think Futurama is my current favourite. Simpsons is quite close, and I really respect it for it managing to keep jokes up for about 22 years.

Can I just say the worst Simpsons episode was the one done by Ricky Gervais - that episode was awful.

Oh, wasn't somthing I watched regularly, so I probably just missed that it went like that. Pity. I think my oblivousness toward its revival comes from not having the channel its on :B

Has anyone seen those 'happy tree friends' cartoons? Now that is wierd, like an itchy and scratchy rip off... only totally missing the point of what the whole itchy and scratchy thing was making.

I've seen them, Red, and I don't like them much. It's not really that funny, only quite stupid and gore'ish.

I also disagree with some people who say Peter Griffin is a Homer Simpson rip off. They are totally different characters, with different personalities and ways to accomplish things. They do have some similarities, though, but not enough to be really considered a rip off. Maybe Family Guy was heavily inspired by Simpsons (with the whole disfunctional, yet good-hearted, family), but that's something else.

I have to admit I have never watched Futurama. The fact there was this cyclops girl was enough to make me not want to watch them several years ago.

Yeah, a friend introduced me to them a while ago. I was just like, !!? Why? There's no intellegent humour in them at all, just gore and stupid cartoon characters.

I think peter Gryffin is a different character, he's more typical of a modern attitude if you get what I mean. It confuses me a little because sometimes he seems completley not interested in his family and at others they are the be all and end all, I think it confuses the character a little.

The problem with them seeming so similar is that both programmes try to look at a 'typical family' with comedy spin. Because of that, I think they've been casting each characer as a typical american dad/mum/teenager and its hard to get away from certain quirks.

Stewie, however, is a fantastic character

I think Peter is a Homer rip-off, however, as the series' and episodes went on, they developed him into something else. I am not holding this against them, since I have done this myself with characters. Using another character or set of characters as a basis is not a bad thing as long as it is a foundation, and not the entire structure.

Hmmm I kinda prefer Family guy and Futurama

The Simpsons was good the first few years but now it just seems like they're trying too hard and the jokes are horribly unfunny.
South Park just is a bunch of jokes that're supposed to appease immature people and so on.
American Dad just sucks.

Metalocalypse and Frisky Dingo were funny.

Family guy and American dad are pretty funny. Most of the shows on adult Swim are pretty good. I don't like south park and The Simpsons.
