Words and phrases you can't stand
We all have a selection of words or sayings that we can't hear anymore whatever the reason. What are yours?
A pet peeve of mine is saying "no offense" after saying something "offensive". Mean what you say and take the heat if it does offend someone.

Re: Words and phrases you can't stand
One phrase that annoys me is "I could care less".
It really doesn't make sense, because the only option it eliminates is the fact that you don't care, which is the very opposite of what you're trying to say in the first place.

Re: Words and phrases you can't stand
'Whatever' (As in, **** you) - Disrespectful.
'Duh' - Slightly lame.
'...' - I can bear with this one in certain cases. In other cases it is just plain annoying.
'If you say so' - Same as above.
'Your ; You're --- Their ; There ; They're' - When they are misused.

"Whatever": Really narks me off, it is very disrespectful and adds absolutely nothing to conversation.
"y'know": During interviews especially, celebs say "y'know" a lot when they stumble over what to say next. y'know what? WE DON'T KNOW that is why the interviewer asked you the God Damned question.
"I mean": Another interview one that annoys me. They say it when they stumble again, but surely "I mean" is a point of clarification. Either someone has asked you to clarify or you have realised what you said didn't entirely make sense or make your point.
Zob, I don't mind that if it is true.
Andy, I like when people say "no offence" as it removes ambiguity. Makes me think "Oh, that was meant offensively? Thanks, I can now feel justified in feeling offended."
possum, the "I have a life" I understand since when people say that on the internet I get confused and take it to mean "I have a life... but YOU don't". I prefer people to say "Real Life caught up with me" or "Real Life issues". The "Stop using dots and smileys" I'm afraid is justified. We all use dots and smileys, just you over use them

Re: Words and phrases you can't stand
the "I don't know" as the whole answer to a question, I really hate that. Personal questions though, like "How are you doing today" or "What do you feel now".
"I don't know"
WRONG! you always know something.

The discourse marker 'Well' should follow a comma. The personal pronoun 'I' is capitalized. And the clause 'to be honest' is a comment clause, so it should be separated from the main clause by a comma.

Re: Words and phrases you can't stand
Speaking of interviews. I absolutely can't stand when the interviewee repeats the question, as in:
"What do you think about the economy?"
"What I think about the economy? Well, I can agree that..."
We're not deaf/blind, we just heard/read the question.

Oh, I love it when the interviewer repeats the question, Paxman is a case in point. he asked the question 13 times, the reason? Well, the interviewee wasn't answering the question
Re: Words and phrases you can't stand
I agree with you on that, Andeavor. Although it does not annoy me that much, it is still a bit irritating.
Some people also tend to say 'Uhhh...' a few times when they read or speak (usually when addressing someone of a higher rank.)
'Uhhh... The pyramids were built by the... uhhh... slaves, while the... uhhh...'
Lol

FML, it's a horrible phrase making out that your life couldn't possibly be any worse. The only people who can really use it and mean it are starving children in Africa who are the last surviving member of their family.
But of course FML is used by white middle class kids with PS3s and Xboxes.

"I hate school, it ruins my whole life!"
Probably the most unintelligent thing you can say. Education is almost everything, without learning we would still be fighting each other with rocks. I promised myself that I never would complain over school, or my life in general. I live in Norway, we even escaped the worldwide financial crisis because we had a lot of dirty oil to sell.
Life is not fair, so seize the opportunities you get..

Re: Words and phrases you can't stand
I absolutely can not stand people who moan they are always depressed or hate their lives. I know one particular girl who I really dislike who appears to make out she has some awful life or is generally very unhappy, and really does advertise this on DeviantArt and on Facebook (I know her IRL)
"FML", "Life sucks", "I hate my life", "I'm so depressed" etc. etc.
Can't stand it unless I know the person is having genuine trouble. I wont deny it, I used to say that kind of stuff too, but I was in a really emo phase at the time which I think I've grown out of. I'll only show I'm unhappy with life if something is really bothering me, not if I broke a freakin' nail or have a little too much school work.

Ah, same. Unfortunately here the context just suits, though we don't always mean homosexual. When I say 'Gay' as in stupid or dumb, I just write 'Ghey' now. I've even started pronouncing it differently.

You're still wrong, the original meaning of 'gay' means happy and joyful. Not even close to what you would substitute it for.SuperLoki wrote:Ah, same. Ah, I know the original meaning, but I'm implying the currently more popular/understood meaning of the word. Around here, if anyone says 'Gay', it's either in a homosexual stance or what World mentioned. People saying 'But it means happy/joyful' is used as a defense mechanism.
Just, in general, I say/write 'Ghey' if I do NOT mean homosexual (or joyous)

Re: Words and phrases you can't stand
What about people that are not religious and say, 'Oh my god' ?
I tend to say it sometimes aswell, although I realise it does not really make much sense if you are not religious.
Patterns of behavior learnt from observation and imitation.

Re: Words and phrases you can't stand
Ah, I say 'Oh my God' a lot, too. I also began capitalizing God a while ago. Not sure why. But I'm sort of trying to get myself into the habit of saying 'Oh my Goodness' or 'Oh my Lord'. Suppose it doesn't matter greatly, unless someone was offended by it.
