Accents, Dialects and Linguistic Abilities

Post by Andeavor on Sat Mar 20, 2010 11:29 am

Since we all speak different languages I was wondering what kind of accents or dialects you have and why.

My native language is Swiss German. It really is a High Alemannic German with influences from French and Italian. It's also a spoken language only and has no written form, unless you write it out as you hear, but you have to know the dialect to actually understand it.

My dialect is Zurich German mixed with a bit of Basel German, which both my parents speak. This was cause for some funny misunderstandings and slight teasing when I started school.

When I speak English I have a general US American accent, due to having lived at the east coast for up to 10 years, but if I haven't spoken English for a longer period of time I have trouble getting the th's right. Unsure

Both my French and Italian are rubbish and consist of phrases such as "Où est la gare?" and "Quanti anni hai?" (I hate text books). I could fake a near-perfect French if I knew the vocabulary and my Italian would be considered 'northern' because I can't roll my r's for dear life.

So, what about you guys? Smile

I have general Northern English accent, however, I do have Echollalia. This means I do have a tendency to assume the accent of the area I'm - so I have been known to sound Geordie, Scouse, Mancunian, brum, Cockney - pretty much every English accent.

I have no idea what my French and German accents are like, but when I speak Esperanto I sound Italian.

My family's origins lie in Friesland. But unfortunately i don't speak a word Fries. Mainly because I spent my youth in the eastern part of my country. I had a real "tukkers' accent back then. Now that I live in the "Randstad" (the western part of The Netherlands) i haven't got really a special accent. =(

As for english. I once got the remark from my English-teacher that I sounded like an arabian trying to speak english =/ (But that was mainly the teacher's fault) Most of the time, I (try to) sound like an english man, like that on the BBC.

And I can speak Japanese, but veeerryyy slooow... =p

I did not know there was a medical condition. I have the tendency to assume other people's accents but only because I don't really have a natural accent in English and I always try to speak like others to be nest understood.

Of course I do have limits.

Hmm. Well I've lived in england pretty much all my life, so my accent is typically english. I did live in germany for a bit, but not enough for any of it to really rub off on me Smile

I've lived all around england too, so my accent isn't really somthing I could define, I guess I speak quite 'properly' due to living around Oxfordshire for a while now. I find doing the 'How now brown cow' rather easy Wink

I do have a bit of a norfolk edge mixed with a little bit of essex too, so yeah quite strange.

The only languages I can write in is english lol, even that somtimes gets the better of me Laughing

My family and ancestors have all lived around Suffolk and Norfolk for gawd knows how many years and to be honest parts of the family have picked up different accents depending on what area you live at.

Considering I've lived in Lowestoft for all of my life, I suprisingly have a very deep, posh accent (although theres plenty of slang mixed in with it). Yet people on xbox live comment saying I sound abit like a farmer Neutral

Not quite. To the uniinitiated they can sound very similar. However, the further north in Scotland you go, the more southern irish the accent sounds.

To me the Irish accent is a bit more sing-songy while Scottish has at times a very odd vocabulary, and it also depends on the speaker, the more authentic the more incomprehensible.

But it's interesting to note that the American accent was heavily influenced by Irish and Scottish immigrants in the northeast, namely the Tri-state area.

/\ I agree with that Vektrix just wrote there Smile
Actually... this whole thread is really interesting too Very Happy

I live in Denmark, and thus speak Danish as my main language. Because lil' Denmark consists of a ton of islands and one peninsula, the dialects differ from island to island. Sometimes a little, sometimes a lot.
Even on the main island of Zealand where I live, the dialect differs from one region to another. And on the peninsula of Jutland, they pretty much speak in a pretty rural kind of dialect. A bit like you'd expect farmers to talk. (I mean no offense here, I'm just saying what it sounds like to me.) It's worst in the southernmost part, where they live so close to the German border that their dialect have features from the German language. Even I have trouble understanding some words Neutral

I myself live just half an hour away from the capitol, and thus my accent is pretty much like the one you would hear spoken there: Flat with a use of slang and contractions of long words. (Although I don't really use slang. It sounds retarded to me.)
Also, because Danish, Norwegian and Swedish is very similar languages, I can more or less understand the last two. But when it comes to actually speaking Norwegian or Swedish, my accent fails greatly XD
I also fail at speaking English.
Writing English? No problem.
Speaking? ... my accent fails greatly one more Neutral

Danish is a horribly flat language in general, and as a native speaker, I must say it doesn't sound very charming either. A friend of my family (from England) even tend to call the Danish language "Gods joke". And I can understand why Razz

I find Swiss German to be unromantic, rugged and a abomination of language in general. It's a mystery to me that we have a working media.
