NEWS: SimCity, Spore studio announcement set for GDC

Electronic Arts teases reveal from California-based company at next month's Game Developers Conference in San Francisco; event to be streamed live.

Electronic Arts senior public relations director Erik Reynolds recently tweeted a message teasing that an announcement from Maxis will be made at next month's Game Developers Conference.

"EA Maxis GDC announcement, huge event w/ special guests," he wrote.

Reynolds also provided a link to an EA page titled "EA Game Changers," where the announcement will presumably be made. According to the page, the event will be streamed live at the site on March 6 at 3 p.m. EDT.

Maxis put itself on the map with its 1990 city-building hit SimCity, which would spawn numerous offshoots including the popular Sims life-simulation franchise. Most recently, the studio put out Spore (2008) and its follow-up, Darkspore (2011).

Could it be related to the January project that apparently never occurred?

Perhaps they are combining SimCity and Spore somehow?

SimCity: Civilizations?

Spore 2?

Who knows, should be interesting, whether it will be any good is another matter entirely.

Maybe it's DarkSpore 2? That would be a bummer.

But a Simcity 5 or Spore 2 announcement would be awesome though.

I did see this. My bets are on a Spore 2 or something completely new. Ah...I forget, Maxis is money orientated, it must be a new Sims game. I think there is a good possibility of a Spore 2 though. After all when that EA game weekend happened there was promise of something to be announce in January. surely this has something to do with Spore because I can't imagine them hinting at new sims expansion pack to people who were there because of Spore.

I would love to see something Spore-related, but I doubt it is. With Spore's limited success, I doubt EA would invest in anything for Spore or a Spore 2. After all, it's why we haven't gotten any new content for a long time.
