NEWS: Brits Believe in Sci-Fi Tech
Light sabers from "Star Wars," time travel and hover boards from "Back to the Future." Many people in the U.K. believe all these things from science fiction and fantasy are, in fact, reality.
The results of a survey that opened National Science and Engineering Week in Britain last week reveal a fine line between science and fiction in the public's eye.
Teleportation certainly exists in the movies, but what about real life? Many British adults don't know.
Here's what the survey reveals, according to Birmingham Science City, which created it. Note that in all cases, the respondents incorrectly believe the following:
• More than a fifth of adults believe light sabers exist.
• Almost 25 percent of people believe humans can be teleported.
• Nearly 50 percent of adults believe that memory-erasing technology exists.
• More than 40 percent believe that hover boards exist.
• Almost one-fifth of adults believe they can see gravity.

"We commissioned the survey to see how blurred the lines between science fact and fiction have become," said Pam Waddell, director of Birmingham Science City.
"While films and TV can be acknowledged as creating confusion, it is also worth highlighting how advanced science has now become, and many things deemed only possible in fiction have now become reality or are nearing creation due to the advancements of science," she added.
Some amazing feats of science have already started to bring us closer to science fiction than ever before.
While 78 percent of Britons believe that an invisibility cloak, such as the one seen in the Harry Potter movies, is merely fiction, University of Birmingham researchers are inching closer to making objects disappear.
And most people -- seven out of 10 adults -- think it's impossible to move objects with the mind. But researchers at Coventry University's Serious Games Institute collaborated with NeuroSky in California to develop a headset to read brainwaves and turn them into digital signals. Users of these "brainwave readers" will be able manipulate images on a screen through the power of their minds.
When the British survey asked what inventions people most wanted to see become reality, men voted for time machines and teleportation, while women hoped for something more practical: a universal cure for all diseases.

Did those that believe light-sabers exist think they were talking about the toys?
The rest saddens me.

Re: NEWS: Brits Believe in Sci-Fi Tech
lol awesome. I've never even heard of the last one. How do you see gravity?
Other than that one, which is bafflingly stupid. In future, technologies may be create that would allow for these sci-fi technologies to exist, possibly even the light saber. However, this won't be for a very very long time.
We are no where near able to teleport people. The most that has ever been teleported, in my memory are protons. They are not even sure is teleportation will ever be available, unless the figured out someway to harness wormholes.
Lightsabers, are theoretically, maybe possible, as it is possible both A. to create a beam of light powerful enough to cut through objects and B. to stop light, thus maybe being able to create a sword like object. Though current, in order to stop light they need a rather large machine. they are no where near putting that kind of technology into a small light saber handle.
As for the other two. There is no technology currently that can selectively wipe out memory. Sure with a strong enough wack anyone can give someone amnesia, but we can't get rid of selective memories.
and Hover crafts will never exist, until the figure out how to harness anti-gravity, which we are probably unlikely to see in our lifetime.

Hold on a sec. So I can't see gravity? Then what's all these wavy lines and dense, dark patches of light I see? I thought the fog on the ground was concentrated gravity...
There is technology being developed for invisibility-cloaks and force-fields. It's pretty damn impressive.
Also, about 50% or so of Russians believe the Earth is the center of the galaxy, according to another study.

Another study says a lot of city kids are growing up without knowing where milk comes from, or what cows are. They just think milk comes from the supermarket. It's sad really.
Though, technically speaking, both time travel and teleportation exist.

Re: NEWS: Brits Believe in Sci-Fi Tech
Ermm, I don't think we'll be getting any Sci-Fi goodies until quite a while.
And there are seriously people who don't know where milk comes from?!

That sounds so weird I can't believe it, and thus not "going totally WTF!!". Yet.

I learned of this a long time ago, but it still makes me sad. All milk brands I've ever had typically at least mention cows once in a while on the back of the carton, so shouldn't that give some sort of hint? Or am I the only one who always read everything* on the cartons when I was little?
*Yeah, including those nutrient and vitamin values... Which I didn't understand a thing of.

theoretically the can exist, however whether we'd be able to practically create time travel devices or teleportation devices is yet to be known. Maybe one day, but not for a super long time.

What do you believe?
You hear something new everyday.
Apperently British people watch too much Star Wars. My opinions on these topics:
-Light Sabers: A big no on their existance, and I see no reason for these to exist, as I wouldn't want to see what they would do to someone.
-Human Teleportation: That may be possible, though I wouldn't try it. Imagine the risks involved, and no one would like to be the test monkey lol
-Memory Erasing/Modification: Maybe, though you can't really tell, since no one would remember.
-Hover Boards: No.
-Seeing Gravity: You can see the effects of gravity. But if you say you can actually see gravity...
In the human mind, you'll never know what you'll find.

Gullibility is a negligible when it comes down to the major issues, all of which the major world powers are falling flat on their faces when it comes to them.
Let people believe in science fiction, at least they can look at the past and say, "Back then we never thought the internet was possible!" The same logic is being used for things like time travel. Don't go discounting the Higgs Singlet, now
Fox news is just one of those pillars of ignorance for the uneducated and stupid. The newcasters are stupid, the managers are stupid, the audience is impressionable.. and stupid. I don't like to label and dismiss so readily, but they make it so easy. I can name more news stations, but Fox news is my favorite to take down a few pegs.
What it really comes down to: People will normally believe what they want to hear. When they see a scientist talking about "Sci fi" technology as if there is tangible evidence for its existence, they eat it up like candy. It's all the same with things like the "multiverse theory" and other denominations of string theory. When the reality is simple, such a proposition cannot be proven.
Disgusting.
