NEWS: Pastafarian wins right to wear pasta strainer hat

VIENNA — Niko Alm wanted to test an Austrian law saying that head coverings would only be allowed in official documents for religious reasons.

So the tongue-in-cheek atheist applied for a new driver's license in his country with a photo of himself wearing a pasta strainer as headgear. Alm said he was a "pastafarian" and that the headpiece was required by his religion. He is affiliated to the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster.

The application process took three years, but Alm said Thursday that he's now got his new license, with pasta strainer and all.

Police officials in the mostly Catholic country did not sound amused.

They said religion was never an issue in Alm's case, and that he succeeded because he fulfilled the only criterion required: leaving his face fully visible in the photo.

The group's website states that "the only dogma allowed in the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster is the rejection of dogma".

Next on Alm's agenda: Fight for his church to be an officially recognized faith in Austria.

I had heard about pastafarianism before, but I had always assumed it was a complete joke and was just some sort of internet group taking a stab at organized religion, but now after seeing this I'm wondering how many people actually take pastafarianism seriously?

Anyone who takes pastafarianism seriously as a religion is missing the point. It is clearly a group that is designed to poke fun at and highlight points of bigotry and silly rules. It is more an indictment on Austrian efficiency if you ask me - three years?

Global warming is the result of the decline of pirates according to my friend's pastafarian 'bible' which he bought. He even got part of his english speaking part of his english GCSE by doing a talk on pastafarianism.

He was obviously trying to see if there would be a problem and if so, make a big fuss about. It's quite funny as he now has a pasta strainer on his head on his photo, police are going to be quite amused (and probably very suspicious as to the authenticity) if they ever pull him over. I doubt he wears that all the time.

I'd quite like to read that bible, looks like it could be an amusing read!

:O I am buying this book. Even if it's just for a laugh.

I liked the part about 'the 8 I really rather you didnt's' and about building huge shrines where money could be spent elsewhere. Looks like the book could have a bit of insight as well as lulzy content.

Never realised where the whole FSM thing came from (well apart from the internet) so that was an interesting read, thank you Very Happy
