Minecraft 1.8 Update
With a loose release date set for the 8th September I am quite looking foward to the changes 1.8 promises to bring for minecraft. It looks like it will become more 'game' like and hopefully that will revitalise it a little
So basicly, post any general discussion about what you and don't like about 1.8 and how you think it will change the game.
---
Breif overview of upcoming changes.
Spoilered, so you don't have to find out if you don't want to
---
NOT in 1.8: NPC's, Nether update and a few other minor things, such as quests/trading. These will be in what is now going to be the second half of this update, aka 1.9
So basicly, post any general discussion about what you and don't like about 1.8 and how you think it will change the game.
---
Breif overview of upcoming changes.
Spoilered, so you don't have to find out if you don't want to
- Changes to the mechanics:
The way the game is controlled has changed a fair bit, with controls and in game mechanics.
-Changes to buttons/controls
There is now a gamma slider for controlling the brightness.
There is now a Field of View slider to see more or less around you.
There is no longer the F toggle fog button. This now has to be toggled through the menu.
F3 will display seed information
You can change between creative mode and Survival mode now, when entering a game. You can switch between the two if you are admin on a SMP server but not on SP files, unless you alter the file manually. I expect this is to stop 'cheating' and help admins build up servers/repair things quicker.
- Lighting and sound
The lighting has changed to be smoother and more realistic. It no longer updates by chunk but overall, hopefully reducing lag too.
Each light source gives different light, the sky blue, torches yellow and so on.
Many many of the sounds have been replaced/improved, most notably, better water and nicer rain! There are also lots of new mob noises including scarier skellie sounds.
- Minor changes
Texture packs that are broken and could cause a crash won't do so any longer, you just revert to vanilla.
The launcher has been updated to feature a picture of a world. It is suggested its the world you last logged out of.
- Gameplay changes:
SO many changes in this update.
- Hunger bar
Most obviously is the addition of hunger. It is not optional, however in creative mode it is not active.
Hunger affects your ability to heal. A level higher than 8 you will regenerate, below one, you starve and lose health :/
Hunger only depleates when you are doing somthing, such as digging ect. Idling will not make it deplete (phew). Actions such sprinting will deplete it faster.
Each type of food restores a certain amount of food/hunger. Chicken being the lowest.
Eating has an animation now and a sound. It takes 1.6 seconds. Or somthing.
You can be posioned and sick, with your bar turning green or yellow and health or hunger decreasing. It is unknown what remedies there are for this, but its suggested mushroom soup or milk may be the answer.
- Movement
Sprinting has been introduced. It is limitless but consumes your food meter at 4x the amount. It also inhibits your ability to turn. You can also jump a whole lot further when sprinting and if you attack while sprinting the knockback will be x2
It is activated by double tapping W and holding untill you want to stop.
You can fly in creative mode now. Not much is known about it at this time.
- combat
Combat has had a huuuge change to it, from all aspects.
The bow now has an animation, for both players and skeletons. Dodge them arrows!
The bow can now be charged by 'holding' and it has 3 levels, taking around half a second to charge to each (so 1.5 seconds to achieve max) the max level is around 3 worth of hearts. Bows will slightly 'zoom' when charging and if it hits after being charged the arrow wil stick in the mob
Charge also determines range, so you have to use them more wisely to get good hits. Spamming them will result in arrows at your feet XD
Critical hits are go. Critical hits are done by jumping and slashing a foe and do around 1.5 more damage D:
With a diamond sword if you right click you can BLOCK attacks. This works nicely with the new mob animations.
- Experience and Mob drops:
Felt this needed its own section because it is probably going to be the most conflicting area.
Experience Orbs
Orbs? In minecraft? What is this un-blockish herecy D:
But yes, there are going to be little spheres of experience that you pick up from killing mobs directly. So with a tool of some sort, not an entity like a piston or lava ect (to stop people farming for them)
Currently they have no purpose, but Notch is looking at how to impliment them. It has been speculated they will be used for trading...
You will lose all experience when you die, so it makes dying just that little bit more unwanted.
Mob Drops
Unconfirmed for now, but mobs may no longer drop items from things such as water, lava, fall or suffocation damage. Obviously this is going to have an impact on a lot of stratgies but may make active hunting more worthwhile/needed.
- Biome and world changes:
The biome code has had a massive overhaul. Old world seeds (think Gargamel and 404) will no longer produce the same world as they did before 1.8
- New Biomes
Biomes are said to be much much larger now, so think twice before wandering into that desert!
There are new biomes, including the mushroom biome where giant mushrooms will appear. There is also an ocean biome and a proper mountain biome (rather than just pointy walls of dirt)
The blending of biomes is now smoother and more realistic
You can now find vines in some biomes! Vines are not climbable, yet, but they do add to the look of an area.
Biomes can be seperated by proper big rivers now.
Ravines can also seperate biomes or be found. Likely to be very deep and not somthing to fall into
- Improved dungeons and other generated areas
Dungeons have been improved, they now spawn as much larger areas with the improved blocks.
We see the addition of strongholds. Strongholds will only spawn 500 blocks away from the original spawn point. They are basicly larger dungeons, it is unknown if they will have multiple spawners or if there will be new mob types for them later on.
We also see abandonded mineshafts. They are basicly big open shafts, with plank spam and rails left in them. Little else is known about their purpose other than they will have cobwebs in them and they hide the new mob, blue spider.
There are now NPC villages, which now only spawn on flat ground. However, as NPC's will not be coming out they will be empty for the time being. (If they are even released in 1.8 )
- New mobs:
At least three new mobs are confirmed for 1.8, these are:
- Silverfish
Tiny little bug things, that apparantly attack in small swarms D: They 'hide' inside blocks so every piece of cobble or ore that you mine could potentially be your last!
- Blue spider
Notch said he would like to add more 'prefix mobs' and the blue spider is one. Like a regular spider, except it has posion and is only found spawning in generated mineshafts. Oh yeah, its also blue
- Endermen
Perhaps the most highly anticipated mob of 1.8, a 3 (?) block tall mob that can create geometric forms by breaking and placing blocks. They aren't aggressive, as long as you don't stare at them. The moment you put your cursor over them, they stope and enter a staring contest with you.
If you lose or chicken out, well, they will teleport a few blocks at a time toward you untill they can charge at you. Apparantly pumpkins negates this staring thing and they also really hate water.
- Other changes
Pigs now have snouts. How cute.
Spawning algorithm has changed, so animals are more rare to come across. In addition to this, we can now 'reach a certain condition where they will not despawn' enabling farming. It has been said 'breeding' will be implimented but it is likely to mean that more animals will spawn if you are 'farming' them.
- New items:
Along with new mobs there are new items.
- New foods
There are lots of new foods available in 1.8. These include the new 'farmable' Watermelons and pumpkins. You can also now collect chicken, lamb and beef, all of which will be stackable.
Eating raw chicken will give you a 'disease' most likley food posioning. Raw pork will not.
- New blocks
Along with the addition of better dungeons and strongholds, there are 3 new block types, Stonebrick, mossy stonebrick and cracked stonebrick.
There is also a new glass pane that works similar to a fence, but its erm, glass.
There is the addition of iron bars... not much information on what they do yet.
There will also be 2 new types of stairs, brick and what appears to be smooth stone stairs.
- New drops
Some mobs will also drop new items.
The feather from a zombie has been set to 'Rotten Flesh' but its use is unknown so far.
Cows drop raw beef, chickens (yup you guessed it) raw chicken and so on.

Re: Minecraft 1.8 Update
On 'Rotten Meat', I have heard some believe it will initially do damage, but if it fills your hunger beyond the healing point, it will regenerate more health than it cost. Not a good thing to depend on...

Re: Minecraft 1.8 Update
Yeah, apparantly it turns the health bar green or somthing and hurt you for a set period of time. If there is an antidote or somthing later I can see it being used in strategic ways.
I remember hearing that it wasn't really implimented yet, the health thing was more of a placeholder. I guess it's similar to slimeballs.

Lol. Rabies!
Anyway. I think it sounds awesome too. I am pretty pleased about the eating mechanics and the combat mechanics. It makes for a much more strategic game. (Not to mention the whole sprinting mechanic and eating time reminds me of another game...)
I just realised... I missed some stuff out about Experience and Mob drops... *goes to update OP*

I knew about most of this stuff, but blocking with diamond swords and the inclusion of an ocean biome are new to me. The more I hear the more I can't wait!

The sliders are what I'm really looking forward to, as my graphics card needs an upgrade from average...
Vines are just the cream on the cake for me, it sparks new hope for enviroment enhancement.

Re: Minecraft 1.8 Update
My guess is they're going to be pretty rare, just like any of the more-dangerous-than-average mobs to date. Notch even said something along the lines that most of the time you'll encounter them, they'll be way off in the distance and all you'll see will be some creepy-looking silhouettes moving blocks around.

Re: Minecraft 1.8 Update
I think he was really inspired by all of the creepy pasta herobrine stuff. Endermen seem like a souped up version to me. Kind of annoyed that water is like lava to them though :/
Still, when 1.8 comes out I'm going to stare em right in the face and then run to the nearest puddle.
I am looking foward to the sliders too. I can see okay in caves and stuff, but I think having the option to change things like that is great. The thing I am looking foward to the most, however, is the combat mechanics.
No more arrow spam and autoclick combat. Yay.

I don't like the changes they are doing with the droppings. The orbs we could maybe do without.

If the orbs are implemented correctly they might make a good form of currency for multiplayer.
Can't say I disagree with you about the drops. My monster farms might stop working

The silverfish sound like they would be a LOT worse than creepers... I'm scared for my life now.
I think maybe I'll just stick to creative for a while, LOL

Yes, how are we to relax while mining if we know that each block we break might contain a swarm of deadly bugs? xD
But I think that's one of the great parts of the update: The survival mode becomes more risky, dangerous and adventurous than before. You'll consider the risk of gathering that extra stone before you decide on building and impenetrable castle of epicness and grandeur. Perhaps something smaller and more practically efficient?
And if you prefer building things, such as aforementioned castle, you can just switch to creative mode. You can, to a greater extent than before, choose how you want to play the game.

Re: Minecraft 1.8 Update
There should be an option to remove the exploding monsters from the enemies list.
It's fun when you're trying to fight zombies and such in stuff you've built - labyrinths, bunkers, etc. - but then one of those kamikaze guys pop by and wreck the entire place up. >< That's why whenever I choose to go on some monster hunting I do it far away from my constructions.
But all of those updates seem really good and interesting. I haven't picked up Minecraft in some time but this is leading me to do so again. ^^

I wouldn't be so sure. Just imagine if the soundtrack from "Jaws" would quietly play as they approach

Re: Minecraft 1.8 Update
I had gotten a tad bored of Minecraft, but this update looks rather cool. The introduction of creative mode I like and the other additions like the endermen look awesome.
Also liking the addition of bigger and more numerous dungeons. Unbelieveabley even though I have had minecraft since pretty much the start of this year, I have still yet to encounter a single dungeon. This may just be due to me sucking at minecraft, but still, I like the fact they are making it easier for noobs like me to find them
Still one question I've been is, when will minecraft move out of the beta phase?

Re: Minecraft 1.8 Update
Idle sound for creepers. I think somtimes they have footsteps. I remember the first day I purchased MC and was letting my sis have a go. She had built a little dirt stairwell and was hiding for the night. We could hear footsteps, but I assured her it was day and it was probably a chicken. *digs first dirt block* I screamed as the creeper face appeared and then swiftly the game over screen.
Jaws would be a better addition though XD
---
The strongholds look like a lot of fun. I enjoy SMP because you can find bases and things, its that whole exploration thing I love. This update will definitly bring some need to survive and explore rather than... 'oh I has a little house. Im good.'
And with creative mode... lots of epic builds to be done

Probably in November 11, when Minecraft is finally released.
Although I hope the devs continue updating Minecraft after the release.

It is a shame, but I'd rather they realise that somthing isn't quite up to scratch and delay it than rush it out and us lot be dissapointed. Plus, we won't have to wait too long for 1.9, unlike the vast amount of time between the pistons and this one
