It is free. The Classic version of the game is free.

I've been using the painterly Pack and like it, but I much prefer your torches and lava.

YEah, but thats not working either, it just says "Can't access Minecraft.net" when you try to log in.

You don't need to make an account to play Alpha. You don't need to buy it either, just download it and press login then play offline.

You don't need an account for Classic either.

Of course, if you want to play online, you need to buy Minecraft.

So for now, I'm guessing you can only go offline.
